I thought that he was a good signing at the time. It made me realise that I know jack brick about football.
I don't think that there is much of a committee now. Poch names the players and we work through the list.
Signing forwards is hard
I know that it is difficult to judge, but I thought that Janssen was a Mitchell signing.
I get that, and perhaps my previous comments were a bit to tough.
But we did not even sign someone who fitted the criteria of what we should be looking for.

I think all the stories about Poch wanting more control and that was the reason he signed his new contract and also Mitchell was let go is because Poch did not rate the signings.
We have all done jobs where we had to listen to people above us and do what they ask of us but once we get more settled in the job we get to run things as we see fit and do it better. Poch is a demi GHod and would not want a piece of brick like Llorente.
For that matter I dont think he really wanted Moura either, from an article I read where he said he did not really know what to do with Lucas when he first turned up.
We need to sign just players that the manager actually wants and has a plan for.
All managers make mistakes on players brought in. Even greats like Ferguson. It's a risk you take, rather than a "blot in the copy book"No, i'm sure it was Poch's...Levy kept on upping the bids remember. Plus Poch was at a game between Ireland and the Netherlands to watch him - though many at the time assumed he was watching Shane Long lol
We went for him after we decided Batshuayi was too expensive in terms of wages and a lot of the reason outlined why was because of Janssen's supposed 'fighting spirit' and 'strong me.natality' to not get too down playing second-fiddle to someone like Kane.
Definitely a Poch signing

Potentially signed as a plan B.
It’s not been all bad, he was great against Madrid last season.
Thats what I remember and those quotes were down to Mitchell. I am hoping that Poch now goes with his gut more and does not listen so much to others.
Of course he will have duds, like betting you just want a high ish strike rate, but the strike rate will always be better when it is the guy who picks the team chooses the signings.
Obviously scouts are needed for ideas.

It is impossible to be certain on who was behind any signing.

Yeah the articles at the time coming out from Mitchell how he though Janssen would be a success because he had to over come adversity(getting released as a kid) and had always upped his game each time, that made him think he could up his game to the prem.
Mitchell seems like a snake oil salesman to me, had a couple of early successes at Southampton and like a stock vlogger on youtube lives off that, now just signs talented but well known young players. I could do his job.
What’s happened to Brereton...
I know you rate him and I did too
Really not doing much at blackburn
No not doing a lot, but then does not have a lot behind him. It is all done to timing for a player in his career. I always thought if we got Berahino things would have been very different for him.
Rebic has been a name mentioned recently and he fits the profile, like Son he can play in different positions as well as the striker. Martial is my dream choice but that ship has sailed.
I hate Chelsea but I think their buy and loan out policy has worked well for them. Obviously they are just trying to dupe the system, but if you cant beat them join them.
Now we dont have the money to do it on the same level as them but we should try it with younger players from championship clubs. One thing is for sure in my mind we need to be more creative about who we try to stay ahead of the game. Levy has been doing that with the stadium build but we need to do it with the footballing side of the business.
A bit like it's impossible to know if a club blows 100M on a Messi-type forward whether said club gets closer to winning the league
Impossible yes, but one can make a reasonably educated bet. Janssen came on to good effect in our first league away vs Everton and promptly started the next game at home vs Palace. If he honstly wasn't a buy with a Poch green light i doubt that would have happened, especially given how he likes to introduce players slowly
