FFS : Newsnight now have Baddiel pontificating.
In summary then, the club tried to jump on a bandwagon that was ill thought out, met with massive resistance and so backed out. Meanwhile a 29 year old with 1 England cap who was a pretty average player who has no management experience is in charge of getting us into the champions league and beating Emirates Marketing Project at the weekend.
All told I think Mr Levy has had better weeks.
https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl...-1000--new-champions-league-format-explained/
Qualification for the Champions League will continue to be open and depend on a club’s final position in the previous season’s domestic league competition. The additional four slots available in 2024/25 will be allocated according to three different criteria:
Under the new format, teams will play four matches more than is currently the case. They will no longer play three opponents twice – home and away – but will instead face fixtures against 10 different teams, half of them at home and half of them away.
- Slot one: awarded to a club from the country placed fifth in UEFA’s national association coefficient rankings. Each association's coefficient is based on the results of its clubs’ performances in five previous Champions League and Europa League seasons.
- Slot two: awarded to the domestic league champion with the highest club coefficient among all other domestic champions that have not automatically qualified for the Champions League’s league stage.
- Slots three and four: awarded to the two clubs with the highest club coefficients that have not qualified automatically for the Champions League’s league stage, but have qualified either for the Champions League qualification phase or the Europa League/the Europa Conference League (due to start in the 2021/22 season)
The top eight teams (of 36) will advance automatically to the round of 16, those sides placed between ninth and 24th will enter a play-off round. Those who finished between ninth and 16th will be seeded in the play-off draw, meaning they will face a team placed 17th to 24th – with home advantage in the second-leg match. Teams who finish 25th or lower will be eliminated, with no access to the UEFA Europa League.
The eight clubs who prevail in the play-offs will then progress to the round of 16 where they will each face one of the top-eight finishers.
From the round of 16 onward, the competition will continue to follow its existing format of knockout rounds leading to the final staged at a neutral venue selected by UEFA.
I'd rather watch us in the Championship than that.that could have been so good for us
Us and Liverpool in CL for finishing below West Ham would be delightful! ESL was a smokescreen! If the Premier League finished with everyone in their current league place:
Top 4 in the Champions League
5th place West Ham in Europa League
6th and 7th place Liverpool in the Champion's League through "slots three and four". "awarded to the two clubs with the highest club coefficients that have not qualified automatically for the Champions League’s league stage, but have qualified either for the Champions League qualification phase or the Europa League/the Europa Conference League"
Wow I think people are letting levy off the hook a little too easily here!
He was pretty much damned if he didn't and damned if he did imo.
Taking the moral high ground and not joining the ESL, then it actually goes ahead, he would have been lambasted for missing out on the huge revenues etc etc.
Damage already done
That may lead to more support for the next iteration of a Super League that rolls round in a few monthsFFS : Newsnight now have Baddiel pontificating.
Spot on (the new derp). We were no there for being serial winners. The short lived ESL was about football brands. That’s also why The Woolwich were in it. And levy made us a global football brand. Mou helped with that as our social media profile went up by nearly 25% after he joined.Fcukin' hell. It was fun while it lasted, eh?
We got to swan around with all the prettiest girls at the ball for a couple of magical moments. Other than massive financial and architectural achievements, we really had no footballing basis for being allowed to float about in the company of the world's biggest clubs. We were basically filling out the ranks.
Easy come, easy go. I'm not the slightest bit narked about what happened and looking forward to seeing Spurs run the table in the run in, nick a top-four finish, snatch a honking hunk of silverware and declare ourselves bloody well pleased.
Ryan Mason, Legend. Julien Nagelsmann, Willkommen.
Reality may have issues with that.
