European Super League - Dead on arrival

exactly. But as fans, does it give you more excitement that we might win a cup final on Sunday or that, one day we might move up a spot or two in the financial tablke?

Firstly, we (as individuals) don't really matter, secondly, moving up the financial table makes us more likely to win multiple cups in future.

I'll always take the option of jars of jam tomorrow over a spoonful today.

This ESL is not to my liking mainly due to it being a closed shop. Also, the likes of City and Chelsea are at the root of these problems due to the lack of proper governance by Fifa, UEFA and EPL. We need tighter finatial rules for ALL leagues.

Not sure I will follow Spurs as much from now on, mainly through apathy.

sport, allegedly
It should be but there are other examples, Andy Murray will get a wild card for a tourney because his profile will draw fans, ditto Jimmy White in snooker. Boxing is possibly the best example, there’s a market for ex pros, crossovers with MMA and YouTubers and celebs now having pro fights. Obligatory rematch clauses.
I don’t agree with the idea of a completely closed shop but the monetisation of the sport has meant we have been heading in this direction for a while, initially it was just creating a bigger divide between the top clubs ana the rest and it now seems the beasts we have created have decided they need to guarantee this income and they can do this as their fans are representative of a huge % of the now global audience.

It’s basically a bail out for the clubs who have the biggest financial commitments.

Of course, and I agree with all of that. I just think it's a shame that success in football, and sport in the main, is now measured in the accounts rather than success on the pitch

Are former winners of the Masters not automatically invited back each year too? Taking a place that would otherwise go to a currently active player.

Also, look at F1, there are always a few drivers on the grid who have bought their way in.

Yeah, I see that, but money takes over, the game sold out long before I was born. This is the inevitable result of professionalism.

Part of this comes, for lots but perhaps not you, come on the back of the 17 month horror period under Jose. Little to feel good in that time and a general downward trend. Hopefully Mason can bring some feel good back to the team and then a decent manager appointment and summer window.

That way, whether ESL happens or not, there's a bit more pride to be had in supporting Spurs and fans wouldnt drift away from apathy, as you say

Andy Murray has won Grand Slams. We haven't won the league in 60 years. The rest of the football world are laughing at our inclusion.

Once in a blue moon due to under performance of others, is this realistically any different than getting the invitation for a season?

Only about 10 years ago Woolwich fans might have said the same about us having had one year in it. But we dropped out of for a few years before getting back in now we are out again. Under performing? Or at a level that we currently are as a club.

Timing is everything.

Yes, Spurs matchday was #1 for the short time we were operating at capacity, without the biggest stadium.

Corporate facilities, huge hospitality areas, encourage families and people who will buy in stadium. US ticket prices for baseball/NFL are outrageous, they get sold.
Their a day out
It’s a destination event
I don’t think theh would get that in the prem if there was bigger games for the super league
But the infrastructure is there for it
I loved standing behind the south stand having a beer outside in the sun
It’s how they do it in Germany

A lot of people don't like or want to think of football as a market/product even though it is now clearly big business and delivered by a market mechanism - especially regarding overseas business.

Couldn't agree more. It's become something different but regulations kept it in a 'gray zone' where people like me could turn a blind eye on the increasing focus on the financial part of the game. It's reached the point now where most leagues are a one-two-or three-horse race. Regardless of whether the ESL happens next season, it will happen as more and more people lose interest in domestic leagues. Even we are years away from winning the Premier League, so it's quite a feat to be invited to the big boys' club.

So long as you could pretend it's the same game you watched and played when you were a kid, it worked. Now that they're killing the ambiguity, people will have to take a stand (love it or leave it).

Yeah, I've been to most of the NLF London games, its the same thing. I think there is a market there in football too.

People forget that for most clubs ultimately their walking or running adverts for their sponsors
In reality there are 3 trophies to win... 4 if your in Europe
If fans want trophies and glory it generally comes on one off games (West Ham’s cup final vs us)
But owners and clubs don’t care about one off games in reality. That doesn’t pay the bills or bring in revenue
The machine is designed to feed the beast that is players wages and fees
That’s has grown off the back of foods clubs spending money they couldn’t sustainably afford on players that generally weren’t worth the money they were paying, but needed to bump up the clubs stature
It’s exactly why chelsea and City are fully on board with this as their advantage has been negated. Their cheat mode is gone so in theory it’s a more even playing field at the top... but much worse at the bottom
