European and Global Super League Plans

Basically a closed shop money making machine. Who would want to watch that? The CL is boring enough as it is and BT's low viewing numbers back that up. Someone who simply watches the odd game if it happens to be on (a lot of people have or at least had Sky) isn't going to pay extra to watch it.

Somebody call the waaaahmbulance. Poor Diddums "big clubs" not getting their monopoly this season.

I hope they do breakaway. fudge them.

It sounds like it would be a replacement for the Champs League so not really a shake up of the Premier League.

But still, if you haven't got the Italian / Spanish / German / French clubs on board, then good luck.

Say a permanent league of Barca, Real, Atletico, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, City, PSG, Monaco, Juventus, Milan, Inter, Bayern, Dortmund and Porto to make it 16 teams.

How boring would that get after a while?

Fan Base is still top 5 globally I would think. But shows the paucity of footballing thought here rather than the economic golden goose hope.
And how would that fanbase evolve when Liverpool get thumped every weekend by the other "super clubs"? It would be a disaster for Liverpool with the team they have now imo.

I would have assumed the teams would leave their domestic leagues, so not exactly the same.

Totally agree - I'm a football junky but I dont watch Bayern, Barcelona, Real or PSG. There is little point.

Barcelona and Real would jump at this as their TV "deal" or should that be 'monopoly' is about be diluted and they are really worried by it.

This proposal is probably instigated by the Spanish 'giants'.

The Premier League’s so-called “big five clubs” are coming under pressure to explain why their representatives were seen leaving a meeting with the American billionaire Stephen Ross, the creator of the pre-season International Champions Cup, at the Dorchester Hotel in Park Lane on Tuesday.

According to the Sun, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Emirates Marketing Project and Liverpool were holding discussions with Ross over the formation of a European Super League.

However, according to the Press Association “the talks were primarily about pre-season tournament the International Champions Cup” and not a discussion about a European Super League.

Arsenal confirmed that a meeting took place but denied it was to discuss a breakaway league. “We are strongly opposed to any breakaway,” they said.

“Not Arsenal, nor any clubs at the meeting, are seeking changes to the Premier League and European landscape and no conversations surrounding displacing thePremier League or starting a European Super League took place.

“Discussions were primarily around the ICC and formats of European competitions that would compliment the existing Premier League.”

Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman at Old Trafford, the Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, City chief executive Ferran Soriano and Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre were seen leaving the meeting with Ross.

The American real estate developer who has an estimated wealth of more than £3bn owns the Miami Dolphins and originated the pre-season International Champions Cup in the United States, China and Australia.

The tournament began in 2013 and last year featured Real Madrid, Emirates Marketing Project, Roma, Milan, Internazionale, Manchester United, Barcelona, Chelsea, Benfica, Fiorentina and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Melbourne line-up has just been announced, with Atlético Madrid taking on Tottenham, Juventus and the A-League champions Melbourne Victory at the MCG in July.

Uefa said it had no concrete proposals to change the format of its European competitions but was constantly reviewing the situation.

A spokesman said: “We are constantly reviewing the formats of our competitions in consultations with stakeholders and also with the ECA (European Club Association). At the moment, there are no concrete proposals on the table. We have just gone into a new three-year cycle for Champions League and Europa League, so we cannot offer any further comment at this stage.”

The Premier League said it had no comment to make when contacted on Wednesday.

The so called "big five" were discussing ICC tournaments, yet we're one of the clubs announced to take part.

Strange how this has surfaced again when so many of the Sky 5 look likely to miss out on the CL places.
Nobody will watch that brick except fans of the clubs themselves, and they'll get bored soon enough.

Exactly 3 of those 5 wont make the money cup next season and the owners are bricking themselves that other clubs will do a Leicester of we will stay good for more then a season, what if Everton keep a hold of their players and improve. Less money for the so called big clubs. Disgusting and I hope to hell something we would never want to be a part of, going down the American route.

This. This is them pulling out of Champs League and just doing their own thing. It won't work though.

There needs to be a mass protest about this. The other clubs should be letting us, Leicester, West Ham, Southampton and Stoke win all our remaining games to prove a point.

Maybe let Leicester draw a couple more though.

Not at all surprised. That's what happens when you let the money men loose on football - they don't care about the sport itself, its traditions, the supporters, proper competition, etc.

They don't want clubs, they want brands. They don't want fans, they want customers. And they certainly don't want small clubs interfering with their revenue streams by booting them out of the CL.

I'm resigned to the fact that football in its current state will end up in a European/global super league at some point. There are very powerful people seeing a massive money making potential in this, and they certainly won't give up on that. It's just a question of time.

I f I was a supporter of one of those clubs and they decided to break away, that would be it for me. I'd go back to just supporting local football.

I said if we had moved to the Olympic stadium I would end up supporting a Tottenham Fans FC and would if we ever thought about a european super league.

The great thing if either us or Leicester do win the league this year meaning the is a possibility of it going back to what it used to be where different teams could win the league and actually make it interesting as a spectacle. But I think that is probably such an alien thought for a lot of under 30 year olds, I can actually see a comparison with the EU referendum and the chance to go back to being in charge of our own destiny politically. But with both things the is so much money involved I see only one outcome for both things.

yeah this is what i think, they will still want to be in the prem they just want the money from euro competition to be a closed shop.
