Eric Dier

yeah im shocked. Especially when you consider he can cover Right back and Centre Back and the players he is up against.

Maybe he is paying for pulling out earlier in the season when he wanted to concentrate on getting in the Spurs side as a Centre Back.

Nail. Head.

It was gonna be him or Chambers. Not too suprised tbh, although then again Dier has had more minutes in the league. Probably is partly down to the snub earlier in the year.

My thoughts exactly

Well if so there in lies the rub as well. Favorites or players in form??

u21s is a different kettle of fish to full internationals - if Southgate has a team that has been developing over the course of the qualification period then i don't see any harm in sticking with it (exceptions at either end of the form scale though), id assume that is why Carroll is in there

Good for us for him to get extra rest.

Silly for England though - IMO he and Stones will be England's CBs for the best part of the next decade, so we should be pairing them as much as possible now.

That would be my guess as well.

Clearly a wee political dig by Southgate, doesnt suprise me at all sniddy little pleb!
Awful decision, was quite looking forward to watching this tournment but to be honest this has put me off.
Hope Kane picks up a wee 3 week injury and cant go, fudging plebs!

Gareth Southgate. What do you expect?
He and the other Spurs players are better off away from the English underage setup.

This ...

Add in Dier's flexibility to play either CB or RB, and his recent delivery quality from RB, really wtf?

To me, this is one of those decisions the FA should pull Southgate in and say ..wtf are you really thinking ..

I've enjoyed some of the football Southgate has had the U21's playing, but the more I look at it, the more I see this decision as being about the relationship between Dier and Southgate.
Dier is "one for next year" according to Southgate, yet he is older than Chambers who hasn't played for Arsenal since April and has played a bit part for them all year. Yet Chambers is included as RB/CB cover and Dier is overlooked.

Sorry none of it adds up. I'd say Dier would be right to snub any further U21 squads from here on out, but it might be worth not burning his bridges completely.

I was expecting to see this thread full of praise for Eric Dier. But it is languishing on page 5 full of nothing but chat about Gareth Southgate's stupidity.

Another good game from Dier in midfield.

I'm very confused with you guys... I haven't seen anyone mention that Eric used the back of his head to score against Stoke...

When Chicarito Little Pea Hernandez scored a back header it was huge news.... Eric Dier flicked the ball in with the back of his head and nobody mentions it.

What's going on???

Because he is a CB apparently ;), but i agree he has done really well in the two games he has played so far.

He is a centre back but this is great experience for the lad

He has done his cause no harm at all and I thought he was our motm personally

Really impressed with his play and his attitude generally

I've complimented him elsewhere. He's been good these last two games and had a decent time vs Madrid too.
