Cheap shot as per ...

They didn't get the two mentioned but will have addressed a lack in midfield. They have many players like mudryk so no loss to them.

Why not look at the bigger picture and not be so small minded ... they are doing a brilliant rebuild ... spending money and playing their youth ...
I'm not being small minded lol.

Just pointing out that they are not always pitch perfect in their transfer dealings, so the contrast between their business and ours is not quite the stick you were hoping it was.

And hopefully they do sign him, otherwise a futile comparison.

Not sure why we are discussing the Scum, but for what it is worth (since everyone thinks they are doing such a great job), their £90M bid was turned down and City are now in the game.

I though they were "big clubbing" it, identifying the player they want and just paying whatever it takes to get him, that's what proper owners do apparently...

I think you have an opinion of Rice that can only be bettered by his own mum.

He's decent, doesn't fudge up much, doesn't ever really do anything of note either.

For some further detail on that:

Beautifully described by Statsbomb as a fairly limited player, doing a decent job of a fairly limited role.

This is what a high value player looks like (although £100m would still be over spending):

Or for another view of that:

Now, I rate Bentancur very highly, but I'd be upset if we spent £100m on him. Not sure why but I can't get understat to add the defensive parts onto that, but what is there is an important illustration of how Declan Rice is where promising attacks go to die.
Remember when you were telling me that Stones was rubbish and I was telling you that he had everything to become a brilliant player?….

He was a rubbish defender. He's become a decent midfielder though.

What do you think is the best position for someone who is the polar opposite of Stones? Good defensively but needs to be bypassed when you have the ball.

No Stones has become a brilliant defender who can also play in midfield, you were massively wrong then.

Rice is a fantastic midfield player who has every single quality required to be top class.

.
When was the last time you watched City? Stones plays in their midfield, a change which coincided with his improvement.

Except all the bits about passing, creativity, vision, etc. Would probably fit in well at Liverpool where he can be bypassed with long balls.

Take a look at his xGChain figures - they're Sissoko level. If he were any other nationality, teams wouldn't even be looking at him.

His XChain is affected because he plays with clowns in his team

So spending 100m on a player will keep you happy? I'd rather we bought the right player. Raya for 30-40m would give a much bigger improvement to the team than buying Rice for 100m.
When we're in the CL again, and for the right player, yes of course.

It took Arsenal how many years after their stadium build to start spending? If you want to use them as a yardstick you'll need to factor that in
True. How many years to pay down our debt before we catch up with them?

The stadium repayments are approximately £25m per year so its hardly a hindrance or any great shakes once we no longer have to pay it.

With Woolwich the owner has started putting in his own external funding to complement what the club makes since the esl debacle. That is why their spending has gone up in recent years.

Of course if we had no stadium debt and a £25m a year naming rights deal then that’s an extra £50m that can be spent each summer.

Although on the other hand we have had greater income than Woolwich in recent years due to CL and third party events at the stadium.

To summarise don’t be fooled that the difference in spending between the two clubs is purely due to our stadium debt.

so no reason for us not to match them in the transfer market and wages?
They operate a different model. Their owner adds their personal wealth to the budget on top of what they make.

I hope in time the new regulations will even things out more but I’m not holding my breath

Didn't enic pump in £100m last summer?

They didn’t do that until very very recently
They had to subsidise the losses and the lack of European income

Yeh and now they are back in they can account for that too.

What's interesting is there were plenty of people debating the CL on here over the years, many stating they didn't think it was worth being in and moaning about us striving for it. Going to find out just why clubs do strive for it, it's where its at, love or hate it
