Emirates Marketing Project

That' more than a few minutes worth.
Interesting but honestly as a long term plan for global dominance I think it's fanciful.
There's so many variables on different levels that it's a big risk. One they can obviously afford, but a risk no the less.
 
Aren't all plans of such scope fanciful?
But the resource behind it means that serious in-roads could be made, especially while nearly all other parties seem stuck in an older way of thinking.
 
Enic had a multi-club strategy which fell foul of UEFA rules on clubs owned by the same owner in their competitions, but City are going for a continent wide approach with far more resources and a more complete plan. They might need to make sure Girona don't qualify for European competition, but otherwise only FIFA can stop them with global regulations on club ownership. There is too much money a stake on all continents, with strong vested interests, to make this easy for FIFA even if there was intent.

One thing that is interesting is that City embedded the structure with Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain before they landed Pep Guardiola, so everything was in place when he arrived. Usually the structure is secondary to the manager or the manager secondary to the structure (e.g. the DoF). Here the two go together and know what each other wants and it looks like it is already bearing fruit.

Sheikh Mansour is different from other owners. They are not billionaires looking for a nice easy profit or a plaything, they are the ruling family of a nation promoting their nation on the global stage. The article does a good job pointing out how there is a long-term plan in place and how they can be patient. The Qataris at PSG could be similar, but they seem to have opted for the flashy (e.g. the Neymar purchase) rather than the quiet plan.

Yes of course, and when they come off they look like genius.
There's lots of good ideas in there, but for my money to many assumptions that it will all fall into place because they are good ideas and will be well funded.
In the USA for instance NFL, NBA and even NHL are all so well entrenched that it will be very difficult to break.
On the other continents if they fund the teams on city's model no one else can compete so you effectively end up with a one team league, who wants to watch that? No one, even up here in Scotland where football is the traditioal game with little competition it's stiffled. Imagine what it would be like in India where cricket is huge, competitive and entertaining.
There' a reason clubs make so little per supporter, it's because most supporters aren't supporters but fans.

I can see real value in Spurs buying a medium sized club in South America and funding it to become elite and groom excellent players... ditto a club in West Africa to grow/play players... and a club somewhere in Asia... but is that feasible, would it pay to grow/harvest players here?
 
The Arabs are buying clubs and sponsoring events in their flight network, its a long term plan to promote the airline. Emirates did it but to a lesser scale with sponsorship, their owner decided to use Horses to promote Dubai and the airline naming his horses after things in the Emirate.

The issue with the Emirates Marketing Project project is they have no organic area to fall on, if they owned a Real Madrid or Man United then they would have the global footprint and revenue to at least support the spend but eventually the black hole of spending will dry up, even the Arabs will not want 10 year of black hole spending.

Also what the Middle East is susceptible to is change in heart especially with the hierarchy system they have

Agreed. In a way, I want them to win the league by 30 points just to show what a joke FFP is and how you can circumvent the rules with such ease but I think they could win the league by 50 points and win the quadruple and nothing would change.

I know the media have to make a fuss over the league/title winners but the way people are creaming themselves over Emirates Marketing Project is a little embarrassing. They are merely doing exactly what they should have been doing for the last 9 years with their resources. Sorry but they underachieved under Mancini and Pelligrini. Won the league on goal difference and because Gerrard slipped over. Failed in the CL with the exception of 1 semi final appearance.

I don't really have any preference as to who wins it between them or United but United at the very least have some kind of history whereas Emirates Marketing Project have won virtually nothing before Sheikh Mansour rolled into town.

I generally don't mind if the Manchester clubs win it, but since Fergie left the sense of entitlement of United fans has left me finding them more irritating. Add Mourinho and the prospect of them watching City win it a few times is quite appealing.

I've been thinking along similar lines lately. Say City win the league, go unbeaten and win virtually every game and win every other competition. At what point do the governing bodies say "hey, you know what? this is supposed to be sport, there is supposed to be competition." How extreme does one team have to dominate before it becomes joke?

That's a good point. Mourinho is a grade A clam and United's fans are spoilt brats so it's good that they are being taught some humility.

On the other hand, at least they have fans. Emirates Marketing Project have been telling anyone who will listen for decades that they have a bigger fanbase in Manchester than United. They can't even sell out their ground as it is even with this great team they have!

If they want to continue throwing money at the team, they should be forced to become the Harlem Globetrotters of football - an exhibition team that is only a token opponent and isn't valid for winning anything.
