Yup. It can be down to opposition but I don't think it is the case here. A lot seem to have made up their mind on Dier because of his couple of poor seasons following his injuries and illness and aren't looking at what is happening this season. Skipp does the dirty side of the game really well but he's never going to get the praise because he won't get loads of assists or play a load of great passes. But to me they are two of our most important players this season.

A core, for this season, of Romero, Dier and Davies with Bentancur and Skipp in front them gives us a solid base from which the WBs, Kane, Son and AN Other can build from

Man C have always done similarly with the two CBs, and then DM and full backs in front of them - kind of a solid base 5 players.

Our challenge is our lack of quality in depth. The base 5 I mentioned above already includes 1 below par player in Davies - if you have 1 or 2 injuries on top of that, we just dont have the quality to step in

Agree 100%. A starting LCB is needed with Davies only as cover and cover for Dier or someone to start instead of him.
There is a lack of quality cover in most positions so it'll probably be at least another season before everything is addressed.

tickle my balls with a feather about Dier and Skipp is never going to be a player who hits the highlight shows but players like him ( and his workrate) are never going to stand out but are really important to a M/F shape. They would be the least of our problems for me.

Interesting note, about City's full backs tucking into midfield rather than trying to bomb up the wing. I never did like the idea that a player can be both furthest forwards AND expected to be a defender.

I wonder if Conte could dream up something innovative that means we DON'T expect Royal or Doherty to play wide right, as they are extremely poor at it.
 
Sanchez is strong and quick and that is about it. Hopeless positionally, terrible touch, poor decision making, suspect under pressure, and not obviously much of an organiser. But good at throwing his hands up in the air when things go wrong.

I did think maybe he might make a wing back - but more likely a lost cause.

Watching the last two games it seems we lack (among many things) communication and organisation at the back. Despite individual weaknesses maybe Rodon and Davies could cover as CBs until Dier returns.

And Romero plays more like a cultured defensive midfielder than a CB at times.

Sanchez strength is overrated as well. His centre of balance is bad as he's too upright.

I don’t think he abs any part of his game that is a strength
It’s a shame as with more work on his game and physical side there could be a player there… just not one at the Level we aspire to be at
 
Out of sheer boredom on the night shift I watched the Columbia game.

My GHod, he was awful - Rondon bossed him.

we need to get rid before his value completely drops.

Was Sanchez trying to outmuscle Rondon at every opportunity, like when they faced each other at club level?!

If only we’d let Barcelona have Sanchez for £42m… Rudiger was a bargain at only £29m that summer and they’re on similar wages to boot.
