Daniel Levy - Former Chairman

They always had their hands tied by DL. He could never let them have free reign due to the finances. Maybe I should change my view and suggest there should have been someone else involved to make sure that DL stayed out of the football side. That way he would not have the power to remove footballing brains such as those that you mentioned.

Every club is limited by finances to one extent or the other.

Just archive this cursed thread and move on
Levy is like one of those Grand Designs Revisited episodes where Kevin McCloud goes back to the house a decade later finally finished
The house comes in twice over budget and doesnt have half the original planned features
The man who ended up project managing the whole thing is now divorced and has only a lonely house to show for it

Back in July, in the ENIC thread, I posted the following:

"
...what happens in the next two to three months will tell us an awful lot. I think there's going to be some stuff to tell personally. It's not
Nostradamus stuff, the writing is on the wall. They turfed out Munn, Donna Cullen's departure was known to be coming, Vinai would've been a work in progress for months plus he is not the sort who shows up for a paycheck. I think there's still stuff going on. We'll see how it all shakes out money-wise, but I definitely think we are entering a new era and way of operation. If we are also serious about Wharton, and if that happens, we would be ticking a lot of boxes..."

The rumours have been circling for some time. I think it was Sam Mokbai who essentially said the same on Five Live. People have been whispering about this moment yet no-one was quite sure when. I think when Peter Charrington came in last March it was under the radar. Vinai certainly wasn't. Neither was the departure of Donna....the signs have been there but subtle. Little things, like Vinai being in the Romero new contract video, perhaps even his immediate presence media-wise. It offers the interesting question as to whether the Lewis family will want a couple of years or so investing more money into the playing side of the club to see where it can go, or whether they want to sell soon and this makes that easier as it will be a 'clean slate' for whomever would buy? I am guessing here, but I'd say it is the former however with the caveat that IF a situation or opportunity arises that is felt too good to turn down, then it can be quickly acted upon.

I think it is easy to criticize.
Personally, I see it as a moment to recognize what he has done for this club versus what he didn't, and to further realise he did HIS best which is not always aligned with what supporters want (I include myself).

I hope people take the time to remember all the tremendous work Levy has done off the pitch. He has made mistakes with footballing decisions, however nobody should deny that he has been the best business-based chairman in football over the last 30 years. For signs of how wrong a big club can get it, look at Man Utd.

Finally, the Lewis family are doubtless very grateful for his work. He has made us one of the biggest clubs globally, punching way above our weight when measured against on-pitch successes. The stadium will always be his legacy, and it is to his huge credit that he worked so hard to incorporate so many elements of the Lane in it...

The time is right for this moment, so thank you for all you did do Daniel Levy, and perhaps now we march on and enjoy the on-pitch success we crave...

I think it will be more like Gordan Ramsay's kitchen nightmare. He walks in, sorts out the brickhole that is in front of him, resurrects the business, makes the place looks 10 times better only to leave and come back years later to see the business has gone bust and the building is now for rent.

Seems to me that its lazy journalism when mentioning Enic prioritises on field success. If that was the case they would be giving Levy a brick ton of cash and telling him to spend it.

Not necessarily. It is also very important to have the right structure and people to execute such a strategy. when it essentially rests with one person running the shop, it is hard to make any progressive change. You don't have to read to far between the lines to see that Levy's appt of Munn did NOT work out as well as everyone hoped.

For sure mate - and remember, him leaving doesn't mean he can't also get his narrative out. Counter-snippets emerging from Martin Samuel at The Times that Levy apparently feels he was operating with one hand tied behind his back in terms of owner backing from the Lewises, which forced him to be prudent and focus on diversifying income streams.

The Lewis family will either have to sell, or back up their words about wanting on-pitch success by providing more owner funding. If their only change is to bin Levy for someone who has to operate in exactly the same circumstances, we will see the same results, and Levy will end up the one vindicated. And remember, he's still a major (although not majority) shareholder - think he owns somewhere between 20-25% of the club through his stake in ENIC. So, he'll still be around to do his victory lap, which no doubt will not reflect well on the Lewises if it happens.

.

I think there's some truth to that for sure. It's clear. And I think there's something to be said for the Lewis family wringing the very best out his business skills to explode the club's wealth and profile before pulling the rug out from under him. He benefitted too of course, so not too many tears there. But I think everyone knows exactly what his strong suit has always been, and boy, we benefitted from that.

Be interesting to see if he'll sell his shares.

If he does will he retire or buy another club outright for himeslf? Or even do domething else. He likes america. Maybe do something there or with fifa or uefa?

Whatever fans think. At the top, pretty sure a lot of people hold him in regard.

I think he'll be in the US sooner than later (he goes to Florida a lot and I believe his daughter is in college somewhere there)...

I wonder if US soccer with its salary caps would be his ideal playground. He could build the profile and infrastructure of a club, and wouldn’t need to be figuring out ways to combat the entrants like City and Chelsea. He would be more of a level playing field where his long term view could be the edge.

Surely he’ll be taking a break though? He’s more than earned it?

I understand that’s a parody account but who apart from Sir Bill Nick has done more for the club?
Just name a stand after him, a statue will get defaced. People are allowed to have mixed and opposing views about what levy has or has not achieved.

A stand can then be changed in name also

Maybe not the time to post, or really that important in the grand scheme of things, but this probably closes the door on any future Poch return, right?
