Hi

Just wondering if any of you lot could point me in the right direction when comes to CV's. I am struggling a little bit on what to include and how to word it. Basically i have been self employed for the last 7/8 years but a job has just come up i know i would be great at. How do i go about putting the benefits of being self employed down compared to that of employed. Also how will references work?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated and a template would make me smile even more.

Best thing to do is to personalise each cv to the specifics of the job you're going for. So get your cv standardised and then look at the key skills required in the new job and make sure every one of them is covered. Doing mine at the moment too!

I generally have:

My name, address and contact details (phone and email) at the top (each is on a separate line and centered)

SUMMARY & BACKGROUND - 2/3 lines on myself and what I specialise in then a new para listing out key skills/knowledge in a sentence e.g. Have a wide variety of skills and knowledge in human capital management, HR operations etc

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY - Overview of prior jobs, one line summary of my position there then a list of key activities/achievements in the job I do and then a bullet each for 3/4 key projects (as I'm in consulting so generally get judged on this)

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS - List of all qualifications and education, I have my degree listed but nothing from school as not worth it

Those headings are in caps because that's how I have them on my CV in bold, I also have a full page width thick black line underneath to make the different section divisions stand out.

I don't see the need to list hobbies etc on there like some people do, plenty of time for them to get to know you in your interview and max 2 sides only.

I use Calibri and size 10 font, not worth having anything too fancy.

Just gone through the job hunt and got good comments on it - happy to send it over to you if you want to see it.

I've been reading a great deal of CV's lately and the main ones that tend to stand out are the CV's with achievements. So rather than have a whole raft of boring old roles and responsibilities, achievements, to me anyways, says much more about a person. Then you can discuss the roles and responsibilities in an interview.

Depending on the company the CV will first be filtered by software. If it doesnt contain various keywords connected with the job description it will never even be read.
