Coronavirus

Is there private testing availability though or are all test thru NHS?

Private PCR testing is available, though I can't speak for the accuracy of those tests. The PCR test most of the world is using is not particularly sensitive, up to a maximum of 80%.

Most sensitive investigation currently is a CT scan of the chest.

I imagine the likes of Boris and Charles are getting tested from the NHS pool of tests. In fairness, as much as I think he's a bumbling buffoon, it is right that Johnson, as the leader of the country, should get immediate testing.

I am generally a republican as well but, whilst we have a monarchy, I can also understand that Charles would get tested as well.

I'm more angry at the government's pig headedness about Brexit when it came to the ventilator acquisition, their general wearing down of the NHS over the past 10 years whereby a war footing is the standard rather than the exception, leaving us with amongst the lowest number of general beds and ICU beds in the whole of Europe and failing to prepare adequately for this, despite having ample warning from what was happening in China.

Is it just me, or are the jet set copping a higher incidence of infection than what you would expect? Lots of pollies and celebs seem to be getting it.

Politicians, sportsman and celebrities do seem to be getting it more than the general population. Politicians in the UK, US, Brazil, Ukraine, and the EU (Brexit negotators seem particularly vulnerable). The NBA and PL both had high profile cases early on. I think there is more to it than preferential testing.

I think a big reason is they travel a lot, for business, leisure (notably skiiing) and pontificating to the masses, and meet a lot of people. If you look at the London map the highest infection rates are in west central London (one of the richest areas in Europe) and the northwestern outer suburbs.

For once the poor are not most vulnerable to a crisis, at least on the medical side. This could mean that we get a proper global reaction so that we are better prepared next time.

It is simply that they get tested. Probably 40% of those posting here have or had a virus.

Get well all - I'm just pleased I have a good house with decent sized garden and plenty of food and I can easily shop and pop down to leave things outside for my parents.

I'd assume there's private testing available if you're willing to pay for it. Sports teams are presumably testing their performing sea lions as a matter of course. Think even a bag of brick like Portsmouth had tested the entire first team.

Hopefully this talk of a quicker and more widely available test isn't just hot air, and they can make sure Hoot and his colleagues are first in line asap.
