They really are a steaming pile of dog poo. I said from the beginning look at what south korea are doing and follow them.

Its been a long year and im to tired to get angry about stuff. I hope he gets Brexit finished then fcuks off and lets a grown up do the job.
 
AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, which together have received more than $1.5 billion from the U.S. government, said last month that they would develop their respective vaccine candidates on a nonprofit basis during the pandemic.

“Just like everyone else, we’ll do it at no profit,” AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot said. “This is what a successful, healthy pharmaceutical industry can do.”

Seems vaccine research is at Level 3 or 4. I think 4 can be pretty quickly ticked off too, given the urgency.

Could be some good news even if it is a bit debatable using 15,000 local labrats in the UAE..

Phase III clinical trials of a COVID-19 vaccine in Abu Dhabi using up to 15,000 volunteers, the government in the capital of the United Arab Emirates said on Thursday.

The human trial is a partnership between Sinopharm's China National Biotec Group (CNBG), Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence and cloud computing company Group 42 (G42) and the Abu Dhabi Department of Health.

The study, which began on Wednesday, is the world's first Phase III trial of an inactivated vaccine, G42 Healthcare CEO Ashish Koshy said. Inactivated vaccines are well known and have been used against diseases such as influenza and measles.

No COVID-19 vaccine has yet been approved for commercial use. According to a WHO summary of the state of vaccine development for COVID-19, there are 23 potential vaccines in human trials, with three of them in or starting large-scale late stage, or Phase III, trials to test efficacy.

The trial will test two vaccine strains and a placebo. Two doses three weeks apart will be administered and volunteers followed for a year, said Nawal Alkaabi, head of the UAE's COVID-19 Clinical Management Committee.

Around 15,000 volunteers over three to six months will be recruited, initially in Abu Dhabi. They will be 18 to 60 years of age with no serious underlying medical issues and without previous COVID-19 infection, Alkaabi said.

Sinopharm chose the United Arab Emirates because around 200 different nationalities reside there and it has a focus on medical research and fighting the pandemic, Koshy said.

The UAE says it has conducted more than 4 million coronavirus infection tests on a population of around 9.6 million. It has recorded almost 56,000 cases of infection and 335 deaths.

Sinopharm secured approval for the trial in late June. The experimental vaccine passed Phases I and II of clinical trials with 100% of volunteers generating antibodies after two doses in 28 days, an Abu Dhabi government statement said.

China has been looking overseas to trial potential vaccines because of a lack of new patients at home. China's Sinovac Biotech is conducting Phase III trials of a vaccine in Brazil.

Sinopharm and G42 would not have access to patient data in the trial which would be conducted in Abu Dhabi state hospitals, G42 Healthcare research director Walid Zaher said, adding the UAE intended to manufacture any resulting successful vaccine.

G42 is an Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence firm that has partnered with Chinese genomics company BGI to build a COVID-19 testing laboratory in the emirate and with Israeli contractors to develop technologies to help fight the disease.

Koshy said the company was privately owned but declined to say by whom.

Like other Gulf states the UAE has developed close ties with China, seeking capital and technology to diversify its economy away from hydrocarbon revenues.

However, key ally the United States has warned Gulf states to proceed with caution and to consider their relationship with Washington.

I’m not quite sure of that; after all, plenty of GPs and hospital doctors in the early stages of the pandemic said they were being told not to put Covid on death certificates if there was any underlying condition.

Also, if you go beyond the headline of today’s story, it seems unlikely that very many would have recovered from the virus and then died of something unrelated in the following three months. The figure given by the authors of the report is that this might be true of up to 1,000 people...which is a very small proportion of the 50,000+ who are known to have died in the UK as a result of the pandemic.

It has the feel of straws being grasped by Hanc.ock. Interesting how he wants an urgent inquiry into this but not the government’s overall handling of the pandemic.

I'm not sure this is true when you consider that a large majority of fatalities have been elderly and infirm. I think it's entirely plausible something along these lines could have occurred at a fairly significant level.

My feeling is that this is also indicative of a wider point, for example certain other european countries were reported to have been excluding care home deaths in their figures long after the UK corrected its own reporting for this. This latest issue seems to be another variant on that general theme.

Well our official reported deaths from COVID is 45,000 and we have an excess death level of 65,000. So, we may have over-reported COVID death but then what on earth could have caused all these other unexplained deaths that we haven't seen in the last 5 years?

It's almost like our 45k number is total horsebrick.
 
Shouldn't worry about countries reported deaths. The only measure worth looking at is excess deaths. Then if you wanted to, you could compare nations. But what is the point?

It could be absolutely anything - the problem is the FT picked up the story and just repeated it till it became gospel that every excess death in the UK was Covid.

As said at the time, just because you have had covid and then die doesn’t mean you have died from it - completely flawed.

the truth will out one day - either way!

Its not just the FT. Excess deaths is how every public body and every academic who studies pandemics, flu, etc gets national data on the effects of the virus. Do you have a better way to record deaths caused by Coronavirus?
