Copa America Centenario 2016

Spurs7891

Jermaine Jenas
Forget about the boring boring Euro 2016 ! Copa America is where the real exciting football will be played ! This is the 100th anniversary of the Copa, hence the special edition being hosted by US, despite it being held and won only last year by Chile.

Groups
Group A : United States, Colombia, Costa Rica, Paraguay
Group B : Brazil, Ecuador, Haiti, Peru
Group C : Mexico, Uruguay, Jamaica, Venezuela
Group D : Argentina, Chile, Panama, Bolivia

But too bad it will be held June 3-26, almost at the same time as Euro 2016(June 10-July 10). So, there won't be much media coverage like Euro.

Obviously, Chile are the defending champions but Brazil and Argentina will be favourites to win it. Brazil have won the last 4 out of 7 Cups but Argentina have not won it since 1993 and will be desperate to win it, especially Messi. I think time is running out for Messi to win his first major tournament for Argentina. He is already 28 and will be desperate to win it for Argentina before he retires. If he fail to do so, he cannot claim to be on the same planet as Maradona.

Also, find it annoying that Argentina has selected Higuain again. Higuain must be the biggest bottler in Argentine football history ! History books won't forgive the way he wasted 2 glorious chance to win the World Cup 2014 final and Copa America 2015 final for Argentina. To make it worse, he even missed the crucial penalty against Chile in the Copa final penalty shootout ! Can't believe the Argentina coach still selects him ! Hope Lamela will get a chance to play and impress for Argentina !

Betting wise are the big boys playing? Suarez especially?

Neymar isn't playing as an agreement Barcelona made with Brazil.
Neymar will be playing at the Olympics in Brazil instead.

Argentina are going all out to win this. Messi might be out though after coming off injured last night.

Uruguay have a full squad apart from injured Caceres.

Pity the games wont be on proper telly. Who the fudge has Premier TV?

So, Lamela and Yedlin are the only Spurs players involved in the Copa. Have to feel sorry for Paulinho who was a regular for Brazil until he joined Spurs.

Seems strange that they're letting an invitee host the 100 year anniversary

Though I guess it makes sense in a neutrality POV

So, as expected there is not much coverage about the Copa despite it starting in less than 2 hours time.

The first match will be between US and Colombia. Yedlin and Dempsey are starting for the Americans. Surprised Dempsey are still playing despite being 33. Wonder if there will be any drama when the Colombians play the US. Remember, when Colombia lost to US in the 1994 World Cup, Escobar scored an own gal and was murdered when he went back to Colombia !

Mad that Kaka's in the Brazil squad despite being 34 and playing in the States. You would've thought that of all nations Brazil would have an abundance of better options to pick from.

Almost easy to forget that inbetween Ronaldinho deciding he liked partying more than his job and the emmergence of Ronaldo & Messi Kaka was considered the best player in the world. That Real move really screwed up what should've been his peak.

when the euros and copa overlap, I could sit and watch football from 6am to 9pm, its a tough job but somebody's got to do it.

Today's results :
Costa Rica V Paraguay = 0-0
Peru v Haiti = 1-0
Brazil v Ecuador = 0-0

Brazil were lucky to get a draw. An Ecuador player's cross/shot late in the 2nd half hit the post and deflected into the goal by the Brazil goalie. It looked like a valid comedy goal but the linesman somehow ruled the ball had gone out of the line before the player crossed.

So, 4 games played but only 3 goals scored so far. Not a good start for the Copa. South American football used to be much more exciting when they concentrated more on attack than defence. But since they adapted the European style of defence-first football, their football has become less exciting now.

Brazil are focusing on the Olympics apparently
