So, Argentina finished 3rd by beating Chile 2-1. But the talking point will be Messi getting red carded for clashing with a Chile player. Both the players were sent off but I think it was harsh. Yellow card for both would have been fair. The ref must have been a Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar fan as he seemed happy to red card Messi instantly. He didn't even check VAR ! So, Messi is still without a trophy with Argentina. Can't see him winning a trophy with Argentina even if he plays for the next 100 years ! He just can't seem to lift his form for Argentina like he does regularly for Barcelona.
History books won't forgive Messi for failing to inspire Argentina like Maradona once did. But then, Messi is so unfortunate for having played in the same era as the biggest bottler in the history of world football, Higuain ! No player has ever wasted open goal chances in 3 consecutive major finals like Higuan did in the 2014 World Cup, 2015 Copa America and 2016 Copa America finals ! Even a school girl would have scored all those chances ! If Higuan had scored those, Messi would have won 1 World Cup and 2 Copa America trophies ! Remember, Maradona has never won the Copa America also but he single handedly won the 1986 World Cup for Argentina !
As for Argentina, they really should look at themselves. Their glory years were the 15 years of the 1978-1993 period when they won 2 World Cups and 2 Copa America trophies. They have won 14 Copa America trophies but 12 of them were won 60 years ago ! They have only won 2 Copa America trophies since then, in 1991 and 1993. They have regularly produced great players but they rarely perform as a team. They can't even seem to find the right coach ! Even Chile has won more trophies than them in recent years.
Really thought Argentina will face Brazil in the final. Instead it will be Brazil V Peru in the final. Brazil beat Peru 5-0 easily in the group match. Hope Peru will make it tough for Brazil in the final. It will be Peru's first Copa America final since 1975. But Peru have won both their Copa America finals in 1939 and 1975. All these while, magical Peru are only known for helping other teams win the World Cups. For the record, Peru have only played 5 times in the World Cup but on each occasion, a team who played Peru has gone on to win the World Cup : Uruguay 1930, Brazil 1970, Argentina 1978, Italy 1982 and France 2018. Let's see if Peru can use their magic to win their first trophy since 1975 by beating Brazil in the final !
