Copa America 2019

Surprised there is no thread on Copa America 2019. This is supposed to be one of the biggest international football tournament !

As usual, Brazil and Argentina will start as favourites. Messi and Argentina will be desperate to win the trophy after the way they lost to Chile on penalties in the last 2 finals.

Too bad Moura, Lamela and Gazzaniga were not picked by Brazil and Argentina. But Foyth for Argentina and Sanchez for Colombia will be Spurs' reps here.

Uruguay hold the record for most trophies with 15 wins while Argentina come second with 14 trophy wins. But Argentina have not won it since 1993, losing 4 finals since then, 2 of them to Brazil. I am sure the whole world would want to see another Brazil V Argentina final !

Everybody dance now!

Foyth and Sanchez are potentially up again each other tonight at 11pm tonight UK time, the tournament kicked off last night with Brazil beating Ecuador 3 - 0 though if that's what you're asking.

Brazil beat Bolivia 3-0, not Ecuador !

Qatar?

I can understand why a confederation with only ten countries invites guest countries, but why Qatar and not say Mexico?

Argentina 0-2 Colombia.

I would say Messi's wait will go on, but with the format a win against Qatar will probably be enough, even if they fail to get anything against Paraguay. It's almost impossible not to get out of a group with Qatar with two third place spots available. They should invite more teams to get it up to 16.

Qatar are Asian champions. It will be a good check for them. I wish CAF would do same but the logistics could be a nightmare.

Mexico have been regular guests for the last 10 Copa editions but this time Mexico are playing in the Concacaf Gold Cup which is being held at the same time.

They did invite 6 teams (Mexico,US,Costa Rica,Jamaica,Panama,Haiti) for the special edition of Copa America Centenario in 2016. But I think inviting too many non-South American teams regularly will cause the tournament to lose it's South American identity. They should instead invite Suriname and Guyana to join the South American Federation. Can never understand why both Suriname and Guyana are playing under Concacaf despite being located in South America. Or they should divide the 10 teams into 2 groups of 5 teams or have a 10 team league round-robin format.

But firstly, the South American Federation should make up their mind if they want to have the Copa America every year, 2 years, 3 years or 4 years. It started as a yearly tournament in 1916 but has been held inconsistently since then. The next edition will be held in June next year in Argentina/Colombia, most probably clashing with Euro 2020. Apparently, they want to have it every 4 years from 2020. Don't think it is a good idea as it will surely clash with Euro every time. Copa have better quality football but don't think it can compete with the popularity of Euro.

I don't think Suriname and Guyana would add much. 152 and 177 in FIFA rankings. Guyana has closer ties with other Caribbean islands and play cricket under the guise of the West Indies, so this presumably explains why they chose the northern federation. It's possible they joined a Caribbean confederation and that this merged into the North American one.

I think the two American confederations should merge. They would then have around 50 members, about the same number as the European, African and Asian conferations. They could together run a better regional tournament and qualification for the world cup would get better teams.

Edit. Seems my guess was correct. There was an earlier confederation for the Caribbean and Central America

Wikipedia said:
The Confederación Centroamericana y del Caribe de Fútbol (English: Football Confederation of Central America and the Caribbean), also known by its initiallism CCCF, was the governing body of association football in Central America and the Caribbean from 1938 to 1961.

In 1961 it merged with the North American Football Confederation (NAFC) to form CONCACAF, the modern continental governing body for North America.

USA will never join a body where they are not the dominant member, nor will their tv audience watch a sporting event where their teams are either outplayed or cheated by third world refs and the possibility of seeing their flag burnt in stadiums.

TBH its not recognised as major torment in Europe due to the time difference IMO
And of course the environment of where its played has a big impact on the results in South America (altitude being the big one)

I have been watching some of the matches, I always enjoy international football, because I don't care too much who wins. That said, I REALLY don't want Urugauy to win it. I always forget how viscerally dislikeable Suarez is, until I see him again. I hate the thought of him (and the goon player) winning anything.

I wouldn't mind Argentina or Columbia winning, for Foyth & Sanchez's sake, or Japan.

Don't know much about Guyana but Suriname have produced many good players who went on to play for the Netherlands including Gullit, Davids, Seedorf, Hasselbaink, Winter, Drenthe, Rijkaard, Melchiot, Bogarde, Vorm, Babel, Kluivert, Reiziger and Wijnaldum. There is no reason why they can't produce a decent team to play in the Copa. Can't see North and South American confederations being merged any time in the future as the North American teams are too weak and will lost out in any merger.

It has been a poor tournament so far. 3 out of 4 quarter finals were decided on penalties after finishing 0-0. Not sure even a Brazil V Argentina semi final can lift the tournament. I think wrong usage of VAR have really spoiled the tournament. There have been too many long delays to check on the VAR and too many goals ruled out by VAR, especially in 50-50 situations. VAR lifted the World Cup last year but it seems to be having negative impact on the Copa America.

Apart from the VAR, all the big-name players have looked tired and complacent including Brazil and Argentina. Messi has been poor in all the matches. Brazil V Argentina match in any tournament is normally entertaining. But looking at the way both teams have been playing so far, won't be surprised if it becomes a boring match that goes to penalty shoot out. Colombia and Uruguay were having a good tournament but surprisingly have gone out in the quarter finals, albeit on penalties. Chile won the last 2 Copa but thought they will lose to Colombia. Instead, Chile have done well to progress to the semi finals. I think the biggest upset so far have been Peru beating Uruguay in the quarter finals. After getting hammered 0-5 by Brazil in the group match, never thought Peru will progress to the semi finals. Can see Chile beating Peru to progress to their third consecutive Copa final. Messi and Argentina will be desperate to beat Brazil but not sure they are capable of doing that looking at the way they played so far.

Unfortunately I couldn't watch Brazil vs Argentina due to the timing. Brazil won however and thus Messi's wait for a senior international trophy with his country continues.

Argentina played well but their attack were toothless. They did hit the post 2 times but didn't look like scoring. Brazil took both their chances well. Argentina have now lost almost all their crucial matches against Brazil in major tournaments recently, including the 2004 and 2007 Copa America finals.
