Circus ManUnitus - Nobody's At The Wheel

A lot of pearl clutching about Martinez’s comments this morning. Heard a clip of Walcott on 5live saying it’s disrespectful to the manager, but he’s clearly not blaming the manager and calling out someone above him.

The media love when a player speaks out but hang them out to dry when they do

Martinez made to apologize and fined by Utd. What was our response to Romero’s almost exact rant last season?

Not sure what the best course of action should be in that situation.

Utd have it right. If you don't manage these situations then you set a wrong culture. Martinez admitted that it was not the time or place to express those views and apologised. Fair play to him.

I don't recall us fining Harry for the Miami nonsense. He never apologised at the time. As you say, we didn't manage the Romero situation well. He certainly didn't apologised. Then we do try to change the culture and not tolerate the social media stuff from Richi, fans turn on the club. He never apologised for the Insta post but we seemed to have moved on. He never got a fine either.

This stuff is important. It's about making sure no player is bigger than the club they play for and follow the club's protocols on comms. They're all good guys who care but that's not the point.

United getting anything right would be some achievement.

I swear, anytime any of the other bigger clubs do brick, United does it's hold my beer impression, they have to be the biggest circus.

Did Martinez really apologise? Seems he spoke about speaking in the moment when frustrated. Did he withdraw the main criticism?

"The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise."

He definitely apologised, but more about the "time and place" to air his concerns.

Yes seems more an apology for when he said it rather than for what he said. Big difference.

I know I've done that in the past myself, emotions get the worst of us at times and good sense flies out of the window.
I have sympathy for most sports people when they have a microphone thrust into their face after a game win or lose they are likely to say something which will upset some people as they have not had the time to reflect on what's just happened.

Carrick gone by Friday lunch time?
It's mad, isn't it. I think most people knew he wasn't the right man for the job when he got it but, to be fair, he did so well last season that they couldn't really not give it to him.

The problems at United are much, much deeper than the manager. They could bring in Conte, for example, and he'll have them competitive for a season or two before his effect wears off and they're back in crisis again. I really don't know where they should go from here.

I am thoroughly enjoying it though...

He's a disgrace. Good grief. Openly blaming the manager! Carrick's answer was excellent.

Yeah, total disgrace. Been reading some United fans talking how Carrick made them do less running and now they’re unfit, as if that explains how utterly lazy these players are.

They have a player culture that is worse than ours over the last couple of years. Calling out Wilcox, calling out Carrick, while putting some of the laziest performances possible on the pitch. What a job to turn that oil tanker around. The moment things are difficult these players throw in the towel and blame everyone but themselves.

I believe virtually all players get away with under performing knowing the manager will carry the can, can't remember the media ever focusing on players as they do with managers.
I read that Fernandes understands the tactical side of the game as well as any other United player, what does that mean? Are they all thick or that he's super coach?
I imagine we've all thought we know better than our bosses at sometime in our careers but we've not had the godlike status of footballers and been able to tell the world it's all the bosses fault for any failure.

I think pretty much everyone thinks they know better than the manager at some point. That includes fans, pundits and players. Yet, none of us has a clue how difficult that job really is. You see lads like Rooney, Gerrard and Neville go into management and all of them would have had strong opinions as players - the former two particularly. Yet they failed.

People generally don't like criticism or handle it well. I see it every day in my job - the slightest hint of criticism has people making excuses or deflecting blame. As a football manager, you get very harsh public criticism, some of it personal, from all angles. You have massive, massive egos to manage and you may not be getting the right support from above. Yet, it's you and you alone who carries the can for results.

It's a horrendous job in many respects and most of us have no idea exactly how difficult it is.

I have and always will despise Fernandes, a wonderful player on his day, but he's an absolute, moany, rat-face tosser. Carrick was never fit for the job, looks like they're just trying to get him out the door now.
