Christian Eriksen

Thats the point I made earlier. People make excuses about him not having the right players around him like Alli, but for Denmark hes the boss - basically kills that whole line of thought.

Yes, Intl football isnt as good etc, but the Denmark squad is leagues below ours even without Alli.

I have said, and maintain, Eriksen has the quality/ability to be able to step up and absolutely run games for us - without Alli or any of them around (and even without Alli, with Son, Kane..).

That he doesnt really is on him and not other factors, IMO.

Serie A teams will buy their cast offs.
But I think he will keep Modric and Bale for another campaign, add Hazard*, Neymar and 'a Lukaku type' aka big fekker up front. Kane hopefully too expensive.

*if Hazard comes Bale will be off? Swap?

Kane won’t go there yet if at all

IMO the recent management appointments are going to change the direction for a lot of clubs

Dare Chelsea sack a manager when they have a ban
Will Ole get lucky again once he has a permanent job (He has done some clever stuff too)
Will Arsenal actually invest properly
What will pool do if they don’t win the league again and will players leave
City... can they buy everyone

Generally when Eriksen is on the top of his game then so are we as a team, however when Eriksen is not on his game ( like now) then the team is not as well.

Nuff said, i honestly can not believe some of the stuff i am reading.

Its fair to question, which is the chicken and which is the egg?

Is the team on top of its game because Eriksen is? Or is Eriksen on top of his game because the team is?

Good question and i am sure that there are a few who would take option two just now, but i did not hear anyone suggesting that when Eriksen was driving us forward over the last few seasons.

Ive defended him massively over the years. This season though there really isnt much to defend, I think he is letting us (and himself) down.

In years passed I really believed he was irreplaceable. Now? I actually dont think his leaving would be the end of the world (which is not to say I actively want him gone).

We Stop! Hammer time, at least yours are more balanced then some who are saying he is not that important to us. As i said earlier i can not believe some of the moans about him. Who says Spurs fans are NOT fickle. :(

It does feel like fans need to blame someone when things go wrong, it's part of our human make up I suppose. Eriksen is playing poorly no doubt but I thought he would have built up enough credit to avoid some of negativity aimed his way. I believe his poor form is to blame for our recent mediocre performances. He goes through dips in form every season but this one seems worse than ever. We will soon find out because if his form does not have an impact on the team's form then when Alli and Kane are back in theory we should see a pick up in our performances

To be fair I think there is anyone not saying he hasn’t been great for us. But he isn’t just going through a standard dip in form, it’s been persisting for quite some time. And because of his contract situation it is fair to raise the questions of his current levels of commitment, and whether he should be sold. If it is just the uncertainty regarding his future causing this poor form, then I’m sure everyone would be happy to see him stay and regain his form. If it isn’t that, then whether he should be sold or not really is a legitimate question - would banking approx 100m and using that plus other funds to get in a couple of critical additions enable us to kick on? See Liverpool with the sale of Coutinho. Eriksen has a world class performance in him, but for me he is still yet to reach the levels that Bale and Modric did for us before they left and I don’t see him as having that mental edge. So whilst I and most others don’t want him to go, could certainly see some potential upside for all parties if he did....

For Denmark he stands out like a beacon. Even an average game from him in that shirt is a bright light given the average nature of his team-mates. And even then, he has off-games for Denmark too.

With us, in order to excel to his full capabilities, he has to really really shine, as there are several worldies in our team. I still believe his confidence or some part of his psych can get rattled by strange things.

Let's see how it all pans out, but in our set-up, I believe that when he is the main man, the pressures and attendant increase in quality can sometimes leave him being too cautious.

In this Eriksen conversation I want to ask you what formation do you all think we are currently playing?

We haven't played a 4231 or a 343 in an age.

I know some of you see Dier and Sissoko (or Winks and Sissoko) on the pitch or in a lineup and think we are playing two in central midfield. But we really aren't.

Pochettino knows Sissoko cant play in a central midfield two. He's tried that. It's been a disaster. He tried him as one of the three in a 4231. Also a disaster. He can only play on the right of a three man midfield.

And that's what we've been playing for most of the season. Either 433, a 442 diamond or a 352.

Why is this in the Eriksen thread?

Because Eriksen's form has coincided with him being dropped deep into this three man central midfield or diamond. On saturday it was a diamond with Dier as the holder, Eriksen and Sissoko either side of him and Dele Alli at the tip. Against Dortmund he was on the left of a three man central midfield alongside Winks and Sissoko. Against Arsenal he was on the left of a three with Wanyama and Sissoko, ending up in a midfield two with Sissoko.

Without Dembele, with Wanyama turning into final season Palacios/Sandro, with Sissoko's limitations and Dier's injuries, Eriksen has been forced to do a job for the team in central midfield.

Instead of understanding and gratitude from the fans. It's "why is he playing so brick" and "he's just waiting for a move away".

Eriksen was at his best in the beside Alli in a 343 behind Kane. He has also been consistently top class as one of the 3 in a 4231. If we went back to these formations he would be back to his best. But for that Poch needs to find a midfield 2 from somewhere. Sissoko can't play there. Poch has never trusted Winks there.

I have to say, I think this is a very fair point and it is noted.
343? Not so sure. 4-2-3-1? Absolutely. This is the best shape to get the most out of him.

But regardless, when you have a player of that quality, he should be able to exert -and express- a greater degree of control over the game.
You have to accept that we are a side which changes shape and formation several times a game, so even when we start as a 4-2-3-1, we've often switched to diamonds and 3-5-2s. He has been more than able to compensate in the past.

Sissoko has to be on the right of any midfield because he has spent most of the season covering for either Trippier or Aurier. It is as much about that as it is anything else.

The final thought is that it has become seemingly an issue of confidence and attitude as much as performance. Alli spent much of last season with England dropping into a deeper role so as Southgate could have the maximum attacking options on the pitch (and because England lack a playmaker in the 10 sense). It did not stop him from playing with his head up and looking to be positive whenever he had the ball. Eriksen has dropped into Butch Wilkins mode much more in the last few months, and I think it is a confidence/form thing.

Again, your point is well-stated and well made, but I don't think it supersedes any other comments more than becomes a supporting reason.

Let's hope he finds his mojo fast.

That is fudging ridiculous! What you are saying is that Eriksen is being carried! My word there are some absolutely mind blowing suggestions in here!

For me it is very, very simple.
Christian Eriksen is a unique and supreme talent.
When he is not functioning at optimum standard, people wonder why.
He has everything in his locker, yet when in these phases, seems to suffer a crisis of confidence/lack the extra oomph to take dodgy moments by the scruff of the neck and look to create.

Of all the players we have, he is the one who should one least afraid to lose the ball, yet sometimes it feels as though he is.

Let's hope he comes back from Barca break renewed with vigor and confidence.

And we know what a football genius legend he is. He’s the best manager ever and has the top job in football.

Yeah, just like all the people defending Eriksen and Sissoko regardless of form or slating the world cup winning captain and wanting out on an internet forum are geniuses. What pathetic argument.
Is Eriksen’s a great player, yes.
Is he on form, no.
I really can't see why people have a problem with that or it being discussed on here.

He has struggled for months and yet after every game until this week its been ignored. Every other player has his performance picked over, but not him.

Even dele, Harry and son, but not Eriksen.
It's bizarre, almost like he's not there.
It's cheap shot, but here goes, just like in the pitch.

Simply not true, Harry has the occasional crap game, had been off form for long stretches after his injuries, nobody really questions him (should have had a hattrick against Saints), similar with Dele. Difference is their moment of contribution is easy to pick out. And Sonny as great as he has been can have completely anonymous games.

Eriksen has been off form, but he has numerous moments every game, people go after him much more than the others (just look at this thread)

The side is where it is, i.e. still in top 4, and in CL QF's because of Lloris, Jan, Toby, Sanchez, Sissoko, Erisken, Dele, Kane, Son, have any of them had particularly brilliant seasons? probably not (maybe Jan closest and Sissoko based on expectations). I think people need to realize it's not this group that has been the issue, it's more the supporting cast this year has really not stood up (partially injuries, but mainly just form)
