Champions League And Europa League Changes

Not sure if posted before but I came across this having been blissfully unaware of the proposed changes for next season.

Interesting that 3rd in CL plays 2nd in Europa for the right to play a Europa group winner. Seems they can’t make up their mind if extra games are a benefit or punishment!

Will open up the opportunity for an English team to win the Europa conference, which sparks a new debate that it is better than qualifying for CL as it’s a trophy, unless it’s us of course.

It's really simple

- The success of the PL scares the brick out of most European Clubs
- The shady tax dodging/government props ups and just strait out corruption of previous decades is harder to pull off
- Owners from outside coming in and buying "less fashionable" clubs and making them compete is another pressure

You can take all the proposals and it basically comes down to

- We (mostly Italian, some Spanish and US owned clubs in UK) want to create a list of "top clubs"
- We want to ensure those top clubs can prosper no matter how badly they are run, take away any risk of relegation, loss of revenue in years
- We want to stack the deck so hard against the ones who are not on the list to keep status quo for another 50 years.

It would be hilarious if it wasn't for the fact that they will try very hard to pull it off. Football is cyclic and Italian clubs are mostly not relevant on a European stage anymore, the Dutch clubs faded sometime ago, Spain has an interesting rebuild ahead. If these teams want to be relevant, they need to work on themselves and their leagues, not just trying to rig the game and come up with flimflam suggestions, fudging really? selling the last 15 minutes of a match? wtf?

This is it in a nutshell.

I think it's a more common attitude in European countries that positions of power can use that power to enable their own benefit, which is basically what they are trying to do here.

A lot of Premier League teams, a few Spanish and a few German are very well run - but obviously that's too 'difficult' so just fix it instead. I dont see how this will happen in all honesty.

The full quote on this, laughable:

Agnelli also stressed that football must think of ways to attract younger viewers in an increasingly crowded marketplace. “We could imagine a subscription for the last 15 minutes of a specific game,” he said. “The attention span of today’s kids and tomorrow’s spenders is completely different to the one I had when I was their age.

“If you take golf, if it’s interesting at all, it’s only the last six holes on the final day. You are not going to watch the whole thing on the TV unless you are a hardcore fan.”

Sad but he's stating the bloody obvious.

I think there is truth to that, certainly the golf, I enjoy the last day of masters, don't watch the other days though, I like F1, but only watch the race, despite international football being largely brick I love the World Cup, I would never dream of watching a qualifier though, and I'm annoyed at every Spurs player's involvement in one.

It's not a smart comparison -> 90 minute high paced sport compared to multi-day models

Reality is in football you do have casuals, who like any game of a certain quality and/or switch between watching current dominant team vs. people who follow one side (most of us here)

The fact is the money is going more to the casuals, but I've never heard of anyone who wanted to watch "only" the last 15 minutes of a football match.

I agree, but Red Zone is a big thing in the NFL so it I wouldn't be surprised if there are people that only get excited by game chasing/last stands.

Attention spans are shortening.

So I criticised this guy, but it just dawned on me that I sometimes only watch the last 15 minutes of matches myself.
If I see Arse, Liverpool or Chelsea are losing I'll put on the end for some enjoyment.

So maybe it's similar for casuals / neutrals.

In a way it's good it seems more difficult for CL dropouts.
Also good the formats are standardised to some degree.

Qualifying for the Europa Conference seems a bit of a poisoned chalice for the bigger leagues though.

My personal preference would be some kind of league champions only seedless knockout competition, they should have this in addition to the CL imo. (Champions League and Champions Cup, fudge it)

How about a Europe wide cup for league winners, a cup for cup winners and a cup for the best of the rest in the league. Two legged knockout, we could call it the European cup, Cup winners cup and UEFA cup?

Ah man, that would never work.

So, just realised if we lose the LC final and finish 6th in the league we'll be in the inaugural Ropey Conference?

Jesus wept.

I was hoping the Sub-Ropey League was something I'd imagined after too much custard. Look forward to losing in the last 16 of that one soon.

Yep. As I said last night, it's 4th or tank for 8th.
Nah, we'll finish 7th and have to play 28 qualifying rounds, then enter the competition with much confidence of winning it, before getting knocked out in the quarter final by FC Fromghodknowswhere. As per usual.

To much sense in that for some. Sadly.
