The rock/metal/punk scene used to be decent. It was when the 'Camden Caners' turned up it all got a bit privileged heroin-chic.

I stand by my earlier comment, it's always been clamy, it is just harder to notice when you are one of the clams.

Camden Town has always been "edgy". When I was a kid the High Street was like Dodge City, "black maria" parked by the public toilets opposite the Tube ready for the nightly punch-ups with the itinerant Irish labourers,there was a pub half way down the High Street on Delancy Street called the Brighton and it regularly had a smashed window, started to get a bit trendy in the 60's particularly once the Roundhouse was opened. It was ideally situated between the "nobs" up Hampstead and Highgate and the sinful West End. As a kid I loved the stables and went there regularly as my dad was a wagoner for the railways and going to the lockgates and watching the barges going up the canal. I lived in a small 2 bedroom terrace house with small yard and toilet at the back which was sold for £1.3m 7 years ago, it's mental.

It was originally built for turning locomotives around but that stopped in Victorian times and it had been used for storage before being taken over by Gilbey's Gin until the late 50's, my Uncle worked there, always wondered why he was a man of strange mood swings until I realised what booze does to you.
