Buying a new car - advice please

It's like comparing Ryan Shawcross with Ledley King

Both defenders aren't they?
<Shudder>

To think Ryan Shawcross could be mentioned in this thread...

But you are right.

Those in the know.....

I have to get the S2000 out tomorrow. Been parked up for a week now. I've gone through two bastard batteries in two years now! Can't afford to keep lashing out £70. And that after buying a charger for near enough £100.

I test drove a 987 3.2 when I was weighing up which two seat roadster to go for. Yes, it is the "baby Porsche" - well, kinda, 'cos when I was buying, the 2.7 was the real "baby". The 3.2 was an outstanding drive. Truly. Plenty of people will look down their noses at it - I found mostly those who had never driven it, nor had they driven a Cayman or a 911..... (and I have driven a 911 too - GT2 with which very little is able to compare, but I digress.....)

So, the 987 3.2 - cracking good drive, and styling-wise, much nicer looking than the earlier model years.

However, three things put me off and swayed me towards the S2000 in the end:

1. The 2007MY 987 upped the engine to a 3.4, but there was no way I could have afforded new when I was buying in 2007.
2. The running costs for Boxster were going to be considerable. Well, considerably higher than the Honda at any rate!
3. A mate of mine in the midlands told me about a place that would happily import a brand new, full UK-spec S2000 at a discount of over 20% to sourcing one in the UK.\

The Boxster S is a very, very good car to drive, but financially, it just didn't stack-up for me, and actually, I'm probably glad it didn't, because I still love the character of the S2000 more.

5800, it was up for 5995 the guy was a fudger he wouldnt budge but it was in excellent condition. Gun metal grey, tangerine (yelloworange seats). 81k. 54 plate

Was disappointed as the ashtray but in the middle was broken, and some of the metal facia was slightly peeling off. That said, I accidentally paid him 5,600 and he called me up and to ask me, he didnt count the money. He asked if I could give him my debit card details tomorrow when he rings up and pay him the 200. What should I do, meet him half way and pay him 100 by cheque as he described it all as Excellent condition throughout, but there are some minor things as mentioned above that are wrong with it.

It has FSH Nissan, and has MOT til september 13 but no tax, the alloys need refurbing but the paintwork is immaculate and looks awesome.

Enjoy the car. No doubt - it is a decent motor. Each to their own! You will get more "everyday" driving out of it than the S2000. But there is nothing quite like swinging the rear of the S2000 out!

As for the £200 shortfall. Well, you could look at it as it was his bloody stupidity for not checking. I mean really. With a cash transaction I would count, and then count again! Dunno mate. Depends on your outlook. The seller will probably keep hassling you until you reach some mutually agreeable conclusion. One thought - did you definitely give him £200 short? He's not trying it on?!

The interior issues you describe wouldn't bother me that much. The alloys would. But... it was "sold as seen". So if you didn't raise the issues at the time of purchase I don't think it's reasonable to try negotiating on them after the event. Alloy wheel refurb done well ain't exactly a tenner a pop though!

I did bring it up and he did offer 120 for alloy refurbs, he could do them himself or I could take the money off. I then pushed it to £200 so I cant come back on the alloys. I might just give him the £200 back as he looked a bit like a gangsta in a mansion, with about 40 cars. Electric gates, and dogs etc. He drove a hard bargain and he really didnt want to lose much money on it so Im sure he will pester me for it. But I wont give him my bank details, I will either send him a cheque tomorrow or transfer electronically.

I nearly lost it coming round a corner today when the back swung out, and also nearly got doneby the rozzers on the M25, slowed down in time as they were parked up on the chevrons in the middle of the motorway the snidey fcuks.

Also, does anyone know how I get tax as the V5 is not in my name so apparently i have to go to the post office with my confirmation of insurance and do it this way. I only have the certificate of motor insurance on email, should I print this off or just show them on my Iphone?

I can't even remember what's needed for the tax disc as I've been renewing online the past couple of years!

Isn't there a tear-off bit of the V5 when you transfer ownership?

I'd print the certificate. Wouldn't rely on the Post Office Counters staff to be able to make head and tail of an email on an iPhone. Might just be 'cos I'm a bit "out in the sticks"!

You agreed on a price and you inpsected it as seen. If you failed to notice the cosmetic blemishes, unfortunately that's your fault.

By shortchanging him (even by accident) you should still pay whats due imo as you could have walked away had you not wanted the sale to go through.

Nice, how much was the insurance?

Hopefully I'll get one myself some day.

On the £200 you should really pay it, can't bring up things later on really when its sold as seen. Just transfer electronically would be my advice.

right dudes, another one to add to the equation.

Porsche Boxter 3.2s.

Discuss.....

I was contemplating getting one but Jeremy Clarkson made a great point that always stopped me from getting one... im paraphrasing here but he says something along the lines of 'Someone only buys a boxster because they want to own a porsche but cant afford the good one - you will always look like the person who couldnt afford the Carrera'

Coke and kittens...haha

Paid him yesterday, too much hassle to even ask him to contemplate taking some off and it's not the right thing to do.

Insurance was 860, it was 640 but I forgot to mention a NON fault claim so put that on and it went up, bastards!!!

Nice ride, congrats, probably more of a day ride as was mentioned, and more manageable (S2000 can be fairly twitchy at the back).
