No stat is useless, because you should always be considering the context.

Correct, and it's often the trends of stats and the grouping of stats that tell the story.

As an example, look at the dribblers passing stats or the passers dribbling stats. I would have no problem with guys like Spence and Odobert letting their passing stats slip if they did unpredictable things in the right areas. I'd be worried if our centre halves had really low passing stats though.

Perhaps Ange is last in the fantasy football league at the club. He's not playing enough champ manager like the players to know what's going on.

The point is he is saying using assists as a STATISTIC is useless because there are many scenarios around how a player can get an assist, it's not automatically demonstrative of a great piece of play by a player to get the assist. He's not saying assists aren't important, I would have thought the point is pretty obvious and what many many other people have said - not sure what the big deal is here....

Excately this one of the things i dislike about the game in todays time is that so many fans place so much importance on STATS that are made up to make money on sites that feed it to punters who put far to much importance on them. Stats can be a usfull tool but so many fans are led to believe they are the holy grail. It a lot of cases they are not.

There is a gig 2 rows behind me. I was told he is a teacher. He is a proper clam. He literally spends all game slagging the gig off. I can’t remember the game but he was be bemoaning Johnson not tracking back (this guys miss 30s with a tramp beard so not Baleforce) and when the team dealt with it, countered and Johnson scored he didn’t celebrate.
