Ben Davies

He has his critics but he's better than most back-up LBs in the league and better than the back-ups we have at GK, CB, CF, and in most attacking positions

Won't hear a word said against Vorm - the man has been excellent as a backup for Hugo, and has rarely disappointed in his (sparse) games over the years. Other than that, you may possibly be right, although I think Davies isn't great as an understudy to Rose given the difference in their playing styles.

Decent today I thought. Hopefully a run of games in Rose's absence will see him continue to improve. I think fans (I'm guilty myself) expect too much from him when he was only getting the odd appearance here and there.

If he'd put in that performance against Stoke, there'd be some who would have dismissed it for coming against a clearly inferior side. To play so well against Everton in a crucial, high-profile game was a strong statement. He was among our best players on the day and it will build everyone's confidence going forward.

If the backups across the squad were as good as our backup fullbacks, we'd be bulletproof.

Its not necessarily about the quality I think. Davies is a very good lb imo and would get into a lot of starting elevens in the league. It is about whether he fits well into the team and style of play if the first choice is injured.

For example, I think Tripper as a normal rb is obviously superior to Moses as a rb for example? But as a rwb and within the tactics that Chelsea and we are playing, Moses is a superior option. etc etc.

I think they are pretty much; other than in the final third (Sissoko and for the time being GKN and Janssen).

Agreed, Vorm, Trippier, Davies, Wimmer, Winks, Son are all great depth options.

The three you mentioned are the obvious candidates for upgrades.

Both Davies and Trippier for me have been worse this season vs. last, and I put that down to playing time. We have got to figure out how to use them in cup runs and still be successful, otherwise we will always have a worry about burnout +rusty players for cover.

I was talking about him this morning with a work colleague - Saying I could see him being sold in the summer for £20M +, that he would not want to be second choice for many more seasons (although didn't realize how young he was).

He is better than most at our club give him credit for and covers two positions (back 3 / Lb) - and as the back 3 becomes more popular can see there being a demand. Trippier I think has another season in him here, I expect westham to offer £10M and being told to do one.

maybe his less than impressive performances so far were down to the change in tactics (full back v wing back) and the Everton performance is a sign that he has been working on his game behind the scenes and its starting to come together? obviously one swallow doesn't make a summer and all that but it is an encouraging sign at least, was thinking that he wouldn't be suited to be cover at wing back and would eventually be sold in the summer, if the new contract rumor proves to be true then fingers crossed yesterday wasn't a one off

To be honest, I don't think there was much difference in those two performances. Not all bad nor very good in either. What I do recall is vs Everton he did something that made me furious! It's the most girl, chicken, coward, childish thing I've seen by a professional footballer for a long time! Coleman came at him and faked a cross which made Davies turn his back to him and cover his face with his arms to protect himself from maybe being hit by a cross that never came! Instead Coleman just breezed past him and made the cross. It made me raving furious! 12 year old girls do that. Professional footballers should certainly not!

Davies put in a decent forward pass to Kane for an assist and had some other good moments but I do get fed up with the number of times he passes backwards, so often returning the ball straight back to the player he got it from.

I suspect it's one of the reasons why Verts prefers either to go on a run himself or pass across the back. It's also why Danny Rose is so much better going forward. He is not afraid to attack the opposing fb or cut inside and go on a marauding forward run.

Verts is driving forward so often he is almost definitely under instruction to do so IMO.

Yes you're probably right. He used to drive forward quite a lot in his early days but it tailed off until quite recently. Seems likely he's been encouraged in order to compensate for the absence of Rose. Then again Davis has also been getting forward a hell of a lot more just recently too, so what do I know.
