Atletic Bilbao for me. They've achieved alot in their time seeing as they only sign Basque players which is something I admire and personally find an amazing feature for a club. That's quite unique.

I used to like Barca and at one time I used to like Real Madrid. The galacticos and the Barca side in 2006 played some amazing stuff. If antyhing Barca probably do play better stuff now but both them and Real Madrid play with a real dirty attitude which I don't like. Both of them seem happy to cheat and play unsportingly.

didn't realise how many would get all tinkley over using the word 'support'. thought i was on arsemania for a second.

but this is about what i figured. not a unanimous favorite either way.

Seems it comes down to: shirt color :)gav:), playing style, individual players ruining it for the rest (busquetts, pepe), or Messi v Cristiano

both are capable of acting like tools

Barcelona, because they just play better football without being whiny bitches all the time.

Messi is probably the most fouled player in the league yet he very rarely makes anything of it, just gets up and gets on with it. I can't say the same about Ronaldo.

Completely agree.

Got to be Barca. Real Madrid have historically been a club run and supported by facists.

This is actually a myth.

For some reason, people are under the impression that Real Madrid was the Franco regime's preferred team. If anything, Atletico was a more likely candidate for that dubious honour.

Santiago Bernabeu, Real's great president (who built Real from being Madrid's number two club to being the biggest in the world), was no friend of the regime. There are a number of recorded instances of his openly defying it or getting involved in major disputes with it.

It is a fact that Franco did try to use Real Madrid as a propaganda tool. But he did so without either Real Madrid's consent or their desire to be associated with the regime. So any fault was not theirs.

What I like about both, is that despite the fact we have to put up with agonizing tossfests over them, and their players are by and large supermodels and divas, they still show true passion and heart when they score. Even in a minor game, or a friendly.

They love to play, and can be a joy to watch, but Id be lying if I said I gave a flying f#ck about either.

They both play act and have horrible clams playing for them, but they're the two best teams in the world by some distance IMO and I love the El Clasicos. tinkles all over United v Liverpool which is billed as the biggest game in the world, at least over here anyway.

Against everyone other than Barca, Real Madrid are brick hot. I prefer them to Barca because they are a bit more direct and cut-throat, a bit more English if you like, and Ronaldo is simply a monster.

What I prefer about English derby's is the fans and the atmosphere. Do they ever sing in Spain? I never understand how when a goal is scored in a big game, they just raise their arms to celebrate, and start clapping. You never see jumping around going nuts, like after the Crouch goal at Eastlands.

Yeah I agree about the atmosphere being poor. All the playacting/cheating is unsauvory, but the last 5 or 6 el clasicos have been great to watch when Real have actually gone for it rather than just trying to kick Messi off the pitch. I don't think you'll find a higher standard of football anywhere when these two are at their best. At least 5 of the 10 best players in the world are on the pitch when they play.

Another reason I prefer Barca is Messi. Ronaldo is phenomal player, but he's a clam.

Always used to think that too.

But the Madrid fans made a lot of noise when we were there in March of last year.

They don't really do away fans well, though, do they? Nothing from their lot at the Lane.

Not sure if they travel at all within Spain...always seems like a Wigan-esque turnout!

Picked Barca, purely because my Dad took me to the Nou Camp when I was 13. I was totally blown away at that age and have followed them ever since.

hmm
Given that Barcelona is the core of Basque separatism, you might as well say that Barca are only supported by card carrying terrorists

Very strange statement in many regards...!

The Bernabeu is my idea of the perfect football arena, and Real do succeed in exuding magnificence at times. However, they historically also do well at exuding establishment arrogance, croneyism and corruption that would put the goons league registration sleight of hand to shame.

Jim is right about the more lazy assumptions, but it is also true that many of Spains ultra right wing like to bask in the Kings Clubs reflected glory as some kind of badge of political/cultural supremacy.

I can identify more with the anti establishment nature of Barca (perhaps naively looking at deloitte rich list??!) and the way the club is a cultural phenomena, run from the ground up. Can't stand the unsportsmanlike Busquets, but even he can't erase the pleasure his teammates have given me this last few years.

I have never witnessed such a thing as that 5-0 victory last year. Nor a triumvarate of players as Xavi, Iniesta and surely the greatest single player to ever play, imo, Messi.

Madrid!!!

Barca are always on the floor looking at the ref, diving all the time.

Madrid have 3 goals disallowed everytime they play them.

And Madrid aren't? Busquets and Alves dive as much as anyone but I disagree that the rest of the team are divers. Madrid have just as many players who dive and cheat, and whilst effective, their style of football is nowhere near as pleasing on the eye.
