That's ludicrous. He was facing extradition to Sweden on sexual assault and *struggle cuddle* charges. There was no extradition request from the US at that point and if you had read the article, you would know that such a request if far from simple and he would have had many opportunities to challenge it from Sweden.

I care little about the man. Let's hope he gets what he deserves from the Swedish side of things.

One last thing, if we did extradite him to Sweden and the US made a request to extradite him from there, he would be able to challenge the request in Sweden, England and Strasbourg. He is safer there than here.
 
Doesn't it depend which state he is charged in in the US? As we won't agree to extraditions to place that have death penalties? Or something like that.
 
He is an oddball. But you can understand his fear/ paranoia having had the weight of state secretes passing through his hands. People have been assassinated for less.

But he could have faced up to the embarrassment in Sweden almost a decade ago, served his time or fine, and been a free man. Or...skipped out of the embassy in the last 5 years while there was no policeman outside. He would have become an underground cult figure, moved from safe-house to house by partisan supporters.

But he's much safer than all of them in an embassy that doesn't have an extradition treaty, right? That article you linked, whilst informative, completely missed that point.

I don't know enough about the *struggle cuddle* cases to comment on his innocence or guilt, but if I'd done the rest of the stuff he has, I'd be tucked away in a non-extradition country/embassy too.

He didn't feel the need to hide in a cupboard until he ran out of legal avenues to avoid extradition to Sweden.

I think that's perfectly explainable by the fact that he can pop into an embassy at any point when out of prison. If in prison, he can't do that.

I know that extradition has legal prerequisites, but would you trust your life and/or freedom to them? I've seen enough legal cases wrongly decided - especially in supranational courts - to know that I wouldn't.

He should stand trial for the serious offences he is alleged to have committed in Sweden. There is no reason to suspect that he wouldn't receive a fair trial there.

Again, I wouldn't bet my freedom on there being no extradition or rendition before the case was complete.

It would be unusual but would it be impossible for him to stand trial from the embassy? Seems like a sensible middle ground.

Rendition seems very unlikely given that he will be in prison whilst the extradition requests go through the court.

I think it highly unlikely that if he was extradited to Sweden, they would give permission for the US to take him before he stood trial or served his time.

He has ample legal grounds to fight extradition from the UK or Sweden to the US and may be successful.
