American politics

I think what Jeffries said about the win being about everyone was vital. Right now, the biggest concern I have is the balance between overreaching revenge and holding them accountable. It's a fine balance. I watched some Foix coverage and they're already priming theirs up for what they want to frame as a Democrat wave of punitive actions and over-reaches which will hurt the universe. I think the moment needs a balance between the firm, erudite and superbly articulated likes of El Sayed and the unifying 'this is for all Americans' tone of Jeffries.
Yes indeed, it has been an important day for the planet, and it's also shown everyone that Americans are not to be painted with the brush of the President any longer. Thankfully, we can once again say 'never judge a nation by it's leader' with justification once more!

El Sayed comes across as an arrogant prick to me. His behaviour towards James Matthews from Sky News was as bad as I’ve seen in any interaction between Trump and a journalist. He needs to apologise.

The sun is certainly shining brighter today.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is to judge a politician (and people in general) by their actions, not their words. It’s easy to talk the talk, but walking the walk is another matter entirely.

Let’s hope for the best and see!

Don’t like him but I think he’s nailed it tbh. Signs he’s going rogue though.

JD already distancing himself from Trump, as did DeSantis.

As I mentioned earlier, they will drop Trump the moment he no longer proves to be useful to them. There’s a good chance he may actually get impeached this time around.

Agree about Newsom but think that AOC is a different story (not for 2028 though) - her tour with Bernie after the '24 debacle was very positively received beyond the safe confines of NY.

I would like to see Schumer and Jeffries shifted for the reason given above about the bipartisan compromise rubbish. They either need to come out and say we are driving this forward whatever or they need to step aside.

These polls are always misleading because winning the Presidancy is about winning Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin. You are talking about 1Million swing voters across those 6 states and the direction they vote is is really all that matters.

2016 +650k Republican
2020 +305k Democrat
2024 +170k Republican

If that is the focus over elements that have a direct impact on people’s lives it won’t help them to win in 2028.

Ossoff is the obvious choice IMO, maybe with AOC as a sidekick.

Could not agree more on Schumer and Jefferies. The electorate are not asking for revenge - that is the right's framing - the message from the electorate was accountability and stopping the scourge of corruption from the administration more than it was about affordability, though both are connected. As Brian Buetler so aptly put it, "....at the end of a long night of joy and relief, this valedictory from Chuck Schumer, made me stop short, like a ripe fart on a busy dance floor...."

Accountability can easily be viewed as revenge with a little media narrative sprinkled in.

But regardless I’m all for putting these corrupt, immoral assholes on the stand to answer for the past couple of years + Jan 6th, Epstein etc.

It is already started, and is truly laughable consider the last 2 years. responding to the latest rightwing flimflam and then adopting the right wing framing on issues is a trap that dems fall into over and over. You would they would learn but like Lucy with the football never seem to. If dems don't at least attempt to stop the rampant lawlessness, the voters will not forgive them, and we'll be back here discussing the next authoritarian in charge of the America in a few years time.

it must be said, MAGA made it very obvious before the election how they would treat Latino and Hispanic people

the surprise to me was that they got their votes in the first place
True. The post-election analysis was that Latinos, predominantly Men, were attracted to a strong leader. And Biden/Harris were the opposite of that.

Yep. The media machine doesn’t stop regardless of the outcome.

My approach to all of this is summed up perfectly by this song…

Does the data show Latinos who voted Red in 2024 went switched as a result of ICE, or that it’s voters who stayed home last time around?

Double digit swing since 2024, can't find raw numbers to know if that was largely stay at homes or actual aisle crossers. 76% of those that were polled after voting said economy and immigration the main factors given for voting against republicans.

Ossoff categorically said he wouldn't run in '28 and would serve his full term from this election. We shall see if he holds to that.

I’d like to agree but I’ve learned not to underestimate the American electorate who voted Trump to power twice.

You mean 3 times 😂

But that’s my point. The focus on impeachment and legal action against Trump vs actual policy which impacts people’s lives played a role in them losing the 2024 election.

The issue the Republicans have is that you won’t be able to win the nomination without the Trump endorsement but you won’t be able to win the Presodency with it.
