Violation of sovereignty and force prohibition: The U.S. military action on Venezuelan territory and abduction of a sitting head of state is a significant violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use or threat of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state without UN Security Council authorization or self-defense justification

There are a few legal arguments the US can and will use against this.

1) They did so with the consent of Venezuela's lawful administration. As Maduro is widely accepted to have stolen the election, the permission of those who really did is enough

2) Not a "use of force". The US can (and will) argue that this was not a use of force within the scope of the article. It was not a military operation, it was a law enforcement operation, etc.

3) The philosophical argument. If a law doesn't carry any punishment or any mechanism with which to cause or create a punishment, does it even count as a law? The US has a veto in the security council, so it's impossible for the US to be found in breach and have any action taken. So if it can't be found to have breached the law, it must be lawful.

I can't see that happening.

There might be a right wing majority on the SC but there's not a majority of Trumpists. There are at least two from the conservative wing who value the rule of law over Trump's needs.

Currently the only people benefitting from Venezuela's oil are Maduro's party and China.

The absolute worst case is that becomes Maduro's party and the US. So the very worst case is better. If the people of Venezuela begin to profit from that through jobs, infrastructure or a richer government then that's even better.

Chinese people probably think the worst case is America chugging on Venezuelan oil.

Why is a Maduro party tie up with the US any better than China?

Yes, line them up side by side with the US (in its current guise).
And someone from China might see it differently. We view things thru a western lense.

Also, if the US 'allow' (haha) Venezuela to have a fair and open election to re-instate some form of democracy...and then that new government/leader wants to partner with China on oil etc ....then are they going to get a 'fair do's' from the US?

They are storing up the same problems in America that we have in Europe. The "progressive" left think that it is fine I think they will be in for a massive shock. The long hard fought rights for women and the gay community will be the first to go once these extremists get a hold on power.

At least they dont wave flags though, well they do but British or American ones so its ok. Again I am guessing most on here see no issues with this sort of thing.
