American politics

With Michael Bloomberg, the 9th richest man on earth, apparently running for president, Americans are asking themselves some tough questions. Like, why did we ever allow non-billionaires to run for the highest office in the land? And, why aren’t all the other billionaires jumping into the race?

After all, for all intents and purposes the United States is already run by its billionaires. They should care about us enough to make things official. If you like America, you should put a ring on it!

There’s no possible downside here. We already have a guy who calls himself a billionaire as president, and that’s going great. Things could only get better with more of this billionaire magic.

History makes this clear too. Two thousand years ago, in A.D. 19, the politics of the Roman Empire had become a plaything of its ultrarich. We haven’t checked, but presumably we would have heard if anything’s gone wrong for the Romans since then.

Bloomberg (net worth: $55 billion), Tom Steyer ($1.6 billion), and President Donald Trump (“$3.1” “billion”) are a good start. But it’s time for America’s other 604 billionaires to step up to the plate. Here’s a look at just a few of our options for our next president/chieftain/despot:

He reportedly changed his mind not to run after talking to Bezos. They are big-time scared of Warren and Sanders getting elected.

Also he is very small.

A full federal appeals court on Wednesday let stand an earlier ruling that President Trump’s accounting firm must turn over eight years of his financial records to Congress, bringing the case to the threshold of a likely Supreme Court battle.

Lawyers representing Mr. Trump had argued that Congress had no legitimate legislative authority to seek his business records because the panel seeking them, the House Oversight and Reform Committee, was primarily trying to determine whether he broke existing laws — not weighing whether to enact a new one.

A three-judge appeals court panel in October rejected that sweeping argument and upheld Congress’s authority to issue the subpoena by a 2-to-1 vote. But Mr. Trump petitioned the full court to erase that ruling and reconsider the case. The court on Wednesday rejected his request, 8 to 3.

The eight judges in the majority included seven appointed by Democratic presidents, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. One, Judge Thomas Griffith, was appointed by President George W. Bush, a Republican.

The three judges who dissented were all appointed by Republican presidents. Two were appointed by Mr. Trump, Gregory Katsas and Neomi Rao, and the third was a judge appointed by President George Bush, Karen L. Henderson. Ms. Rao had been the dissenting vote in the earlier panel decision.

I'm enjoying the impeachment hearings. Very interesting stuff. Trump even went after Yovanovitch while she was testifying today. He can't help himself, can he?

The stark contrast in intelligence levels between the Dems and the GOP during questioning has been alarming.

GOP constantly attacking the process, the house, Obama, Hillary, anything but actually facing the issues that confront them.

I'm sure it's intentional in order to be digestible for their base, but it's still fudging scary.

Agree that it's also been fascinating viewing. I admire the bravery and professionalism of those testifying.

The GOP guys (and gal) have literally nothing to work with. All they have is throwing brick and banging on about process.

Those 3 witnesses have been very impressive and credible. But even with those testimonies, as credible as they are to a rational human being, I don't think it is swinging the needle too much. Vindmann and Sondland are the key witnesses, IMO. Vindmann because he heard everything and is a decorated war hero, and Sondland because he is a chinless coward who might flip.

Kent yesterday was so fudging slick, very impressive to watch.

What about those who are refusing subpoena to testify? Giuliani etc. Do they end up in these hearings or do they just get away with it?

Refusing a subpoena is a stalling tactic mostly. They are sending it to a court which takes time. For example, Bolton was subpoenaed to testify but was told not to by the White House. So he asks a court what he is supposed to do, which delays things until at least January when this whole thing might be over. He is the worst type of coward, and there are many flavors.

Guilliani is under federal investigation, so we'll see where that goes.I also think he's Trump's next sacrificial lamb when he needs another speed bump.

This. They've got no legal leg to stand on, so much like the "no collusion" campaign they recently ran so well, this is just a media battle.
