Aaron Lennon

and Jol, although he was generally brilliant that year we nearly nicked 4th, our best player on the run in, a couple of last minute goals

Yep. I remember one such injury time winner against Birmingham - but that was fourth or fifth game of the season, I think.

Edit: just realised that you're talking about a season in which we "nearly" made 4th (like so many seasons!). The goal I'm referring to was in the first season that we did make it.

05/06?
Because he scored 2 goals that season. 65th minute goal against Birmingham and a 60th minute goal against Bolton.

I think he only scored a couple that season which was his first with us, definitely remember him scoring away at Birmingham to put us back in 4th after Arsenal had won earlier in the day and against Bolton, the last home game of 05/06 which was a crucial goal as it guaranteed European football in 06/07 regardless of what was to happen against West Ham a week later. Whatever happens here on in, I think we can all be agreed that overall he has been a very good servant to the club when you look at the part he has played in our rise over the decade he has had with us and an unbelievable signing based on value for money, probably one of our best ever on that basis and the time we have had out of him.

Thinking back to some of his pivotal moments for us; The winner against Chelsea in Nov '06, His performance at Stamford Bridge in the 3-3 FA Cup game, His winning of the penalty against West Ham away in March '07 (3-4), The killer goal really in the 5-1 against Arsenal, equaliser at Emirates for the 4-4, His performance against Manchester United in the Carling Cup Final 2009 - Destroyed Evra for the umpteenth time, His form generally over the 09/10 &10/11 seasons with some great goals against West Ham, Birmingham, Liverpool and the assist for Crouch against AC Milan in the San Siro, the goal against Arsenal with Bale in the 2-1 in March 2013..........Great memories!

On overall balance he's been great. I can remember having countless arguments with non-Spurs fans in his glory years about how good he is. Unfortunately the same non-Spurs fans are now saying 'told you'.

Still, a great servant and player. Shame it's gone the way it has.

it's a long time ago, maybe my specs have picked up a rose tint

that goal against Bolton was crucial as we looked like we'd blown it

I have seen a lot of wingers during my time as a supporter of Spurs, the only ones who were better then him ( imo) were Jones, Waddle ( the best ever) and Bale.

I know some will scream what about Ginola but he played mostly in a poor sides with very little flair, this enabled him to stand out more. Lennon during his time here played with Berby, Modric, Bale, VDV and others and never looked out of place.

I agree with the sentiment in a lot of respects but despite Ginola standing out amongst dross, he would have been unbelievable with players like Modric and Bale around him imo. But back on topic, Lennon doesn't get mentioned much when you talk about the crowd who played with him offensively but he was a vital component in the side that evolved from around 2006/7 through to 2011/12 where I think it all culminated in being our best side in probably 25-30 years in terms of the quality of the first 11.

Bale and Lennon wide with Modric and Parker in the centre, Van der Vaart playing off Adebayor...........what an outstanding front six that really was and it is criminal that we didn't manage to win anything and that it didn't survive into 2012/13.

I can't dance with that at all, but Ginola may have been better in a real top team but he was never given the chance and if he was that good you have to wonder why.

Do not get me wrong I used to love watching Ginola play but as I say I think Lennon and the others i mentioned were better then him here ( imo).

We all know how good Lennon could be on a good day.
The reality is we all know how anonymous he could be the rest of the time.
I never saw him as being 'anonymous'.... His work rate was always top class, which meant that he was always involved.

Lennon's main weakness was probably that he always seemed to take several games to get his attacking game going when coming back from an injury lay off.

I'll be sorry to see the little man leave and will generally have very fond memories of his time at Spurs when viewed over the whole 9 years or so.

I'd put Tony Galvin above Lennon too, but would agree about Waddle, an outstanding player.

Anderton was considerably better IMO

Anonymous in an attacking sense, certainly for the past two seasons. It says something that most people cite his work rate when it comes to listing his best qualites, similar to Lamela in that respect.

He simply hasn't lived up to the promise he showed early in his career, if anything he's gone backwards, still far too inconsistent.

I think thats fair, but the better we were the better he played, I think we held him back if anything, much like Ginola and Anderton, they wouldn't have looked out of place in a much better side
