Aaron Lennon

Lennon is like a number of English players at Spurs over hte last 5-10 years in that he hasnt fulfilled his potential. Defoe, Thudd, Jenas, Lennon, Bentley...all had the potential to be better than they've acheived if you ask me. Maybe it was partly due to the large english core of the squad that made them feel too comfortable and didnt push them? Maybe now that Lennon has some proper competition though it'll help him push on (or perhaps he's too old to improve much now?)

I dont see Townsend as getting to Lennon's level though arguably neither will be in our first choice team when everyone is fit (Siggy, Eriksen and Lemela playing behind Soldado?). Will be interesting to see whether Lennon decides to stick around if he's no longer a first choice

I agree. I've defended Lennon for years against opposition fans who slated him for his inconsistency and poor final ball because I thought he would eventually fulfil his potential, but he hasn't in my opinion. Still doesn't get enough goals for a player that is actually quite a good finisher and his injury record is always going to be a concern. I hope he sticks around in the long term, but I don't see where he fits in with the likes of Eriksen, Lamela and Holtby in good/great form and competition from Chadli, Sig and Townsend.

Sig hasn't offered many goals for us. Eriksen will create more chance than Sig.

IMO you've got to consider the personell and the playing style before you discard a players value. its true that siggy has not offered many goals for us since he has arrived..but consider the following

team playing style
personnel
continuity
players playing style

i mention all the above because it could very well be that each of those have a contributing effect to siggy offering goals for us.

last season the team played a different system.......also hampered by the fact that we played through one player in bale, and the level of players was less than they are now, siggy not being a starter, and siggy being deployed in a role that seemingly had him as an advanced playmaker rather than a finisher. quite a bit more to consider but i think those would be more glaring than others

siggy has been a goal threat in most places he has been save for his bit part position in our team last season which wasnt going to get the optimum from him. if we let him focus on his strengths we could see a much greater return. having a playmaker that can offer siggy the ball in positons that would allow his to flex his skill set could be the difference

and is it a guarantee that eriksen would create chances no matter where he was deployed? or does he need to be the centre of attention in a specific system to do that?

the siggy we have now in this team could be very different from the one from last season.

i would just like to point out that Lennon not having an end product is a bit of a myth in recent seasons

(please refrain from quoting stats as thats not what i am referring to ;))

I don't know if I buy that. I get that Bale played through the middle and the team revolved around him, but the only reason he had to score so many screamers from outside the box was the other players didn't play well enough. It just seems like people use Bale's great form as an excuse for some of our players poor form, Adebayor being the prime example. Whenever Sig got into good positions, he looked like a dear in the headlights.

Sig also has/had a rep for being a set piece specialist, rarely saw this for Spurs last season.

I'm not denying that he CAN be a goal threat because he's proven he can be at Swansea, but I'm not sure if he can be at Spurs. Or put it this way, he won't offer as many goals as the other players in his position.

when bale didnt play in the tail end of last season we actually scored 2 goals a game and other players stepped up to the plate. what lets us down was our defensive frailties more than anything else.

by playing through someone you almost literally have to ask their permission before you do anything in an individual capacity.....Bale was AVB's only playing card when bale was on the pitch..the players looked to try and get him the ball at all times....he was allowed to go wherever he please and try whatever he wanted. in short we played through the guy

bale had phenomenal form but that was clearly at the expense of the team growing together as a fully function and contributing unit.

you're not sure he can be a goal threat at tottenham, but last season in a bit part role he got 4 or 5 goals for us, this season he is winning the woodwork challenge and has at least two goals to his name.

notice how this season he is playing in a different team not geared towards one player, surrounded by better players
and is not relied upon to be the playmaker

which other players will offer more goals playing in his position? what position is that actually?

Mirallas, Walcott, Ben Arfa, Navas, Nani, Farfan, Valencia off the top of my head.

as a winger walcott cant tie lennon's shoes, as a wing forward is another matter.

the irony is that walcott has to be the poster child for inconsistency, nani too...but nani is a better all round footballer

cant argue about valencia and navas

Which position is that? Either behind the striker or on the left. Chadli will offer more goals IMO. Lamela playing in either position will offer more goals. Eriksen hopefully will, but even without goals, he will create more chances for Soldado and the rest of the team than Sig will.

Again, I just can't buy that Bale was stopping some of our attacking players from playing well/scoring goals. We didn't spend the best part of £100m on attacking players simply because Bale was hogging the limelight, we bought a lot of midfielders because we needed to upgrade in certain positions.

does he have loads of opportunities to do it but keeps playing bad balls? or does he not get enough opportunities to do it but when he does he does just fine?

It's not just his end product though mate, it's his fitness that is also a problem. I'm not saying we should sell him, but we can't continue to pick him in every game like we have done in the past unless he improves.

its actually not that bad a list

i would question the mirallas one though, and walcott. dont know much about farfan but i havent seen anything when i see him to indicate the model of consistency

Valencia and Navas are the only two who even come close to having "consistant end product" - and even Valencia has been suspect recently. Ben ****ing Arfa? :ross:

Calling Walcott or Valencia consistent is damn funny, bet it'll get giggles from ****/man utd supporters too

Neither are world class, but I would take both over Lennon.

I used to be adamant that Lennon was better than Walcott, he still is and always will be a more intelligent player, but Walcott's productivity has definitely improved over the last couple of seasons. He gets 10+ goals a season.
