This is huge news over here - the leading story on our state broadcaster’s website.

It’s hard to describe what Jack Charlton means to Ireland but there’s a generation of people for whom he is football. Jack is more than that though. What he did for the football team coincided with (some say was a cause of) us becoming a properly functioning and more confident country. Jack was more than a successful football manager, he was a cultural icon in Ireland.

Sadly it’s still very difficult, and was nigh on impossible in the 80s and 90s, for an Englishman to be loved in Ireland. Jack is pretty much universally loved.

A very sad day for a great, great man.
