Thursday - Sunday is less recovery time than Weds - Saturday? OK.

Playing Lyon in the EL is further than playing Marseille in the CL? OK.

Did we play more games in the EL than Barcelona have in the CL? OK.
Are you stupid?

Did I not claim that Wed-Sat is the same as Thu-Sun? For some reason you seem to have the deluded view that it is always Wed-Sat. IT IS NOT!

Lyon? Marseille? Okay... What about Tromso, Anzhi, and other crap teams from the far reaches of Europe?

We would have played more games than Barcelona if we actually reached the final. You were trying to say?

You're right but remember that half the champ league games are on Tuesdays so they play at least 3 Tues-Sat plus being part of the Sky 4 cartel there's a decent chance that the CL teams' PL games go back to the Sunday anyway.
Don't be so reasonable! Some people can't handle this.

Before asking if others are stupid perhaps it'd be wise to read what has been said.

Thu-Sun - two days in between

Wed--Sat - two days in between

Sat-Tue - two days in between

It seems that the only additional days rest you will get is if you play in the televised Sunday games following a midweek CL tie - over the course of a season that's probably a negligable amount, 3 or 4 days maybe?

It is about impact on league form, not the other way round. I don't care whether there is more or less time to prepare for European matches. What matters is that EL is hurting preparation time for league matches more than the CL does.

That's fair but ultimately i don't think a handful of days over the course of a season has that big of an impact - in the EL you will rest/rotate more than the CL where there is more focus/importance placed on those games which will often see your first eleven used more than games in the EL which probably evens out the days extra rest you get a few times over the year.

No, I'm not stupid. Obviously I haven't stated my point clearly enough, or you haven't read the post properly. It seems enough other posters have understood it so I'm not going to bother repeating myself.

We can conceivably fit in at least 6 - 8 second squad players or promising youngsters in the group phases and leave 7 first teamers at home. So what's the problem|?

Completely agree. Leave the likes of Eriksen, Kane and Lloris at home for the away games, unless they are short haul flights such as Spain or France for example.

I'd love us to take the comp as seriously as Sevilla do, massive respect for them. Like others have said, if we want to be in the champs league we'd better get used to playing these extra games, otherwise if we did manage to qualify we'd up end up "doing a liverpool" anyway.

Doing a liverpool?
We are already doing a Liverpool.
They rested the majority of their team away to Real in an attempt to make a half arsed bit for 4th.

I think the idea should be more "set pairs" or groups of players

e.g. Vorm is fine for Europa, take our 3rd choice as sub
for CB's go for a pair, e.g. Dier/Wimmer for cup, Fazio/Vert for PL
midfield, go for Pritchard/Lamela in cup, Eriksen/Mason in PL

just examples, but instead of random, pair players that need to work with each other, and get a system/relationship built.

To me, right now Lamela, Pritchard, Dier, Yedlin +some striker other than Kane should start the Europa games next season

Could work raziel. I've always thought that rotating 3 or 4 players at a time at the most would be best for continuity and not the same 3 each time. Haven't really got time to fully explain it now, but would mean something like every 4th or 5th game you get rested, depending on the variables of who we are playing, injuries, suspensions, etc

I have a feeling it's how fergie did it, he rarely picked a completely different eleven from one game to the next, unless it was a league cup game.

So far the following teams have qualified for the group stage: Augsburg, Fiorentina, Braga, Locomotiv Moscow, Groningen, Anderlecht, Besiktas.

A few more will be decided by the upcoming weekend's cup finals.

22 teams will come through the qualifying rounds, 10 more will drop down from the CL playoffs.

Can't say I've read all this thread(so don't know if this point has been made) but noticed the topic on rest of players and Europa league. If your in The Europa league and have qualified out of the group stage imo you need to not be in the league cup semi finals. As otherwise you don't get any rest in the January period which is needed after playing two games a week followed by the festive period. It didn't helpthis season, that we decided to have a replay in the FA cup 3rd round also! Without that rest period players can fade out. Which is what we saw with Eriksen this season, I think he played the 3rd highest amount of minutes and it was showing in his performances. To also carry on in the Eurropa league unlike the champions league once it starts up again you play 2 rounds were the champions league play one. I don't think it's best to attempt the league cup along with a Europa campaign.

On a side note English clubs need to do well next season in Europe to keep the currant amount of Champions league places. Next season points will replace a season when England scored 18.357 while Italy scored a mere 11.571 that season. On the 5 year total they are 9.82 behind us. A season points is calculated by adding all the points gained by teams from a nation and dividing by the amount of clubs. So next season will be 8 because of West Ham making it harder to score an overall good average. What are the chances that if England lose a champions league place we finish 4th the 1st season it's just 3!
