Why? And who the fudge are these faceless panels that undermine the referees and everyones common sense and opinion, except Jay Bothroyd, but he's a mouth breather that nobody takes seriously. It's shocking!
"Previous clean disciplinary record"? WTF? So if you haven't had a red card before, you can get away with everything? Absolute gonads! He should have been given a straight red previously!

Villa are suing Carragher for unacceptable comments. And reading the Villa fans online they seem to think this is a perfectly normal and sane thing to do. Having had a few good seasons in a row have very much gone to their heads. Just imagine if Spurs decided to sue for the absolute nonsense that gets spouted about us constantly,

Their line is ‘if opinion formers on podcasts start talking Villa down, potential signings and sponsors will start to believe it too. It’s reputational damage.’

Maybe I’m naive and this is just the new world we live in, but I’m thankful our club never acted in such a blatantly tinpot way. It actually reinforced Carragher’s point, because an actual big club would never even think to do this.

This is a really worrying development for me. Carragher expressed an opinion and had his tongue in his cheek expressing it. If things like that are subject to legal action, that's going to kill punditry. They'll all just give the same bland answers as players and managers do post match.

This will probably go nowhere but it's stress that pundits don't really need - being threatened with legal action in the media by football clubs for expressing an opinion.

Pretty disgusting behaviour from Villa in my opinion and your point about it reinforcing Carragher's point is well made.

It's one of the most pathetic things I've heard in recent times. An absolute embarrassment, no matter how silly Carragher's (or any other pundit's) comments may be.

My hope is that Carra and all pundits rally round and double down, not in criticism for criticism’s sake, but in being willing to share opinions, and calling things like they see it. Especially in this case. Maybe it will be impossible to talk about legal action on air but there has to be some way of laughing at how ridiculous this is.

With this and the City thing, it’s just showing how a large section of fans will blindly support whatever their clubs do. That’s the worrying thing for me. It’s like this Trumpian ‘my truth / alternative facts’ thing has made its way into football, exacerbated by the behaviour of the billionaire owners who think the legal system and the threat of a lawsuit is enough to keep millionaire pundits in their box. Whole thing is dark.

And Villa fans especially seem to have gone off the deep end after a few good seasons. The mental gymnastics around why this is a good move, about why they’re actually better than United, about why we’re lucky enough to spend money just because we come from London despite finishing 17th. I’m sure every club has their strange fans but this seems to have taken on a whole other level recently.

And Carragher’s comments weren’t even silly. Delivered tongue in cheek in a chat / banter sort of format. And absolutely correct on the substance as it relates to Villa not being United. Certainly correct for at least another generation.

Silly only in the sense that it was over-the-top and provocative (at least in text, I haven’t seen the video.) But that’s pretty much literally a pundit’s job.

I'm opposed to capital punishment but I'm prepared to accept it for football pundits, they are a cancer in the game and their endless flow of jargon has bred a generation of football experts who want to analysis all the joy out of the game.

How could a judge award for consequential loss? How do you even put a figure on that? Different if they can show they have directly loss sponsors now as a result of the comments but not sponsors they MIGHT lose at a future date. I can't see this going anywhere I'm afraid.
