American politics

What a completely prickish thing to say. Incomparable situations

During Wednesday's meeting in St Petersburg, Witkoff was filmed by Russian TV saying the deal was an example to Ukraine of what could be achieved by working together.

"Your decision to remove export controls on diesel oil from Russia, not just to the US but also to the world at large in the midst of an economic shock, I think that was really important that that happened," he said.

"I know [President Trump] is deeply grateful for it."

Witkoff also said to Vladimir Putin today: “You talk so much about Trump being a humanitarian, you are a humanitarian also, sir. And I salute that. I commend you.” Yep, humanitarian is the first thing that pops into my mind when I think about Trump and Putin.

Imagine trying to navigate that being a diplomat or a top politician in a functioning democracy.
Witkoff, Kushner and of course Trump, are literally selling out Ukraine and by extension Europe in these meetings with Putin. These are a bunch of real estate developers, and they view international diplomacy largely through that lens - money to be made, deals to be had - and fudge the loss of sovereignty and the human suffering and pain along the way. Those are minor inconveniences and trivialities, and are as such inconsequential. Their greed is boundless, their lack of empathy disgusting, and their ignorance infinite.

Each week, the levels these depraved clams sink to, defies the norms we have become used to. People cross their fingers and hope that with change, may come accountability, but most of them will be gone with the gold. We'd all pay good money to see a proper Mississippi Burning style dose of comeuppance.

I’m not sure they will be gone with the gold; I think they’re planning on sticking around for decades à la Putin; which is why I think Trump will disregard the outcome of the midterms and will, in fact, ratchet up his ignoring of conventional ways of governing.

Trump being asked to tell the truth :):):):):)

He’ll pull the lawsuit after the elections - the deadline set by the judge works in his favour that way. No way is he going to agree to this, nor to have his family/lawyers forced to give their testimony. And he’ll find some way to blame the BBC for acting unfairly/in bad faith.
Fair play to the BBC though for standing up to him.
