Hmmm, not sure what would have been made in the 70s, 80s or 90s of his trip to Argentina in the week in which the club he was supposedly captaining was involved in its most important game in decades.

I can imagine Roy Keane would have had to have been pulled away from him in the United dressing room if he’d done it there.

You know what's nice though? In years gone by we'd have clung on and clung on to get £2m more for him, got right to the end of the window, and would have tied the recruitment staff up with a one out one in policy, and we would have ended up signing the next Dragusin.

Instead we have Senesi, we have Van Hecke, and we have Robertson as senior defensive heads to add to VdV and Tiny Danso, already in the building and embedding in our dezerbian culture.

This pleases me.

Been thinking about Romero and the qualities that make him the player that he is, especially given the fact he is not an exceptional athlete by any regard (ie. he’s not particularly tall, fast or strong for his position).

It’s his anticipation and reading of the game. That’s his superpower…the reason some call him “world class”. He is one of the best in this regard that I have seen in Lilywhite for a while.

He can make a crazy, unpredictable game with a spherical object being chased by incredible athletes look slower and easier than it is. I believe this is why Messi says he is the best CB in the world…because he is one of a very small number of players who can play on that wavelength.

Flawed…absolutely. World class ability…no doubt.

How "world class" has depreciated over the decades... this "superpower" you mention has nothing to do with anticipation - it is all about flying into tackles which, admittedly he does gets a high percentage of... however his recklessness means that statistically he always misses a percentage... and when he does miss them - as happens in almost every single game - it invariably means a yellow or red card.

That is anything but world class. The best defenders in the history of the game rarely made a last ditch tackle... because they were always at the right place to snuff out a chance. If you want to see what genuine world class defensive anticipation and reading of the game looks like, hit YouTube and type "Franco Baresi". Then we can continue the conversation....

I grimly accepted that for what the club wanted to be, and with Levy in charge, he was an OK choice. It was thin ice backing of the manager because he was our manager and I felt it was important to support him/move on from what I saw as a sad decision to sack a winner.

Saying we were guaranteed to lose games was a turn-off.
Telling me that he felt taking no risk was the biggest risk and then proceeding to take no risks was poor.
Saying that we were playing well early on when we weren't was an issue.
Realizing by early November that I was being told to have patience for him to perfect a style of football I thought was brick was when I first wanted him gone.
When Paratici rejoined and then very quickly quit/made clear he wanted out, I wanted Frank gone first.

He should've been sacked in December.

He was the man I wanted for the job. I had this belief that we needed a coach who would be able to beat Wolves at home 5-1 and the next week churn out a draw away to Liverpool.

It turned out he would churn out a draw at home to Wolves ffs

Talent with stupidity is an odd combo
Scary that he has gone for much less money than inferior players have gone for in the same window, but I did say before that no one will pay the money for him with his record
Atletico will suit him they aren’t a very good side IMO.
