Guglielmo Vicario

You do wonder if what led to that goalline clearance in the final has put a much target on Vicario's head now. Frank has a history of keepers who are very comfortable on the ball AND under pressure...so it wouldn't surprise me if we get an upgrade on him this summer whilst his stock is relatively high

He was effectively fouled, Solanke was backing into him.

I’d like to see Vic behind a proper defence, his stats are still pretty good despite us being a complete shambles at the back for the last two seasons.

I think Kinsky, overall, will be the better goalkeeper. His distribution is better, composure under pressure too, and I think both are very good shot stoppers. He is only 21, 22 perhaps, so he has a lifetime of playing time in front of him, but I expect him to be our No. 1 the season after next.

He can look prone to error when under seige, but I recall Pat Jennings looked erratic at times in his first couple of seasons. Memory may be playing tricks but I think it was not until his third season that he really started to look the business.

It's not just that he is prone to error when under pressure - which isn't a categorical flaw as some media portray it. But it's also that he does not ooze confidence and composure to the defenders in front of him. I think Vicario is a good goalkeeper, I just think that on these two points Kinsky may well be better - certainly become better. His distribution is already better. Would love to be proven wrong and to see Vic continue to grow though. The doc on his return from injury showed what a wonderful character he is.

He’s prone to errors even when not under pressure. He can’t catch the ball regardless of whether there are players around him or not. We should have gone for Kelleher, £18m is a flippin bargain.

Vicario's a good shot-stopper, but beyond that ...
He hasn't really improved any over the past two seasons, either, but given who's been in charge, I don't wonder at it. He should be entering his peak years about now, so if he's going to show there's more to him, he'd better get a move on.

He had a great debut against Liverpool and his distribution is very very good… but after the Liverpool game he wasn’t great or even good.

Now he is 21 so I’m not writing him off at all, but I have seen nothing (apart from his debut) that says he is better than Vic.

He has some great aspects but his saving of shots from range is really bad
Reminds me a lot of Courtois when he came here who always had that as a weakness for a couple of years

I would be, GK's are a risk, we were quite lucky with replacing Lloris with Vic

Really don't want to be like United, Arsenal, Chelsea (who has 6 on books) constantly in search of the next keeper

United and Chelsea haven’t got a great track record in recent years with keepers but Raya has nailed down the no.1 spot at Arsenal for 2 seasons.

Definitely this. Kid's got great potential, ad he showed on his debut, and might become a better keeper than Vicario. He's not that now though.

vicario isn't a team player nor leader too. super hyped up and hot headed but totally focussed on his game only.

kinski is only 21. mistakes and lack of leadership could be forgiven due to age and new surroundings, but he has to show better if/ when he gets his chance next season.

Raya is a top keeper but he is playing behind one of the best CB pairings in the division. Arsenal slipped badly without Saliba. Utd's defence has been a shambles for a number of seasons. Onana isn't as 'bad' as the last 2 seasons have suggested.

An increase/decrease in exposure defines how 'good' a keeper looks to a large part.

Yeah you should factor in the defence in front of the keeper. I still think Vicario makes routine catches look difficult, he opts to punch the ball when there’s no one near him rather than catching the ball and he just has a nervous, edgy kind of look about him that doesn’t inspire confidence. He acts like a nervous librarian.

Whoever is not playing in goal seems better because they aren't exposed week in week out. I remember when people on here were claiming Gazzaniga was a better keeper than Lloris based on the odd appearance he made. Then when Lloris got injured and he had to play consistently, it was clear as day he wasn't at Lloris level....

This is also why with less exposure, being good with the feet is a worthwhile trade-in for shot stopping ability in the very best teams. Ederson has never been the best shotstopper and Victor Valdes too was nothing special. Alysson is impressive as he does both very well and can make 2 or 3 great saves im a game despite spending the rest of it standing around.
