Squad

Odobert is now HG for the league and Europe

Are you sure?

He had one season at Burnley and one season at Spurs. As a 20 year old, I think he can play one more season and become association trained in the 26/27 season but I'm not sure he'll ever qualify as club trained in UEFA terms. He will be homegrown in the PL rules though after one more season as a free pick U21. Even this coming season, we can't put him on the B list as he hasn't completed 2 seasons at Spurs. That is the same with Gray and Bergvall.

Am I missing something?

I thought he did 2 at Burnley
I was wrong

When I look at the squad right now, I can't help but get excited again going into next season

Vic, Kinsky, Austin, Keeley
Porro, Spence, Udogie, Gray
Romero, VDV, Danso, Dragusin, Phillips, Vuskovic, Dorrington
Bentancur, Bissouma, Bergval, Sarr, (Gray), Devine, Abbott
Madds, Kulu, Donley, Gil
Sonny, Odobert, Johnson, Moore, Yang, Solomon
Solanke, Richi, Scarlett, Lanks, Veliz

Have we ever seen a stronger 35/36 players with the right age dynamic and squad balance at Spurs? I don't really see much deadwood to be honest. We could probably lose Solomon, Gil and Veliz quite naturally. There might be some tough choices on a few younger players like Keeley, Phillips, Devine and Scarlett as well. There will certainly be more development loans for some of the kids. Then there are the 1st team squad player upgrades like Biss, Dragusin, Richi that could happen at some stage.

I reckon if we had this conversation just 2 or 3 seasons ago, it would have looked a whole lot worse. You have to applaud the club for the work that has been done to get a squad that I believe is on the verge of something special.

I agree its a great looking squad. Its only really the front three that concern me. I dont think there's a standout player amongst them (though i have hopes for Odobert, Moore and Lankshear)

He got it because of the employment laws we apply for EU citizens agreed as part of brexit.
I believe that still stands for eu people only

Now there is no difference between an eu player and player from outside of the eu. For english clubs.
It was that we were still a part of the eu when he was loaned back to the french club. Brexit took place during that loan. But as he was an eu citizen registered at an english club he was given the right to stay.
We did the same thing with sarr. But he's not counted as hg as his loan back to france was considered a loan abroad. As we were no longer a part of the eu.

That’s not how ally gold explained it
But it was bloody complex

Apologies for the long post, but we need something else to think about.

I was thinking about our squad depth. It is impressive.
Against Villa we took out all of the first teamers, to keep them safe.
Son was included, but he might not start in our best side e.g. Richie on the left of the front 3.
Then, note that our 3 best attacking midfielders (Maddison, Deki, Bergvall) were all out as well! So we played:

.......................Kinsky
Spence Danso Davies Reggie
.....................Gray Sarr
.......Moore Odobert Son
............................Tel

Which is still a reasonably good side.

Let's compare to the best team in the land right now, Liverpool, in a 4-3-3.
This below is their entire men's squad from https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/mens:

Alisson
((Kelleher))

Trent VVD Konate Robertson
((Bradley Gomez Quansah Tsimikas))

Gravenberch Szoboszlai MacAllister
((Endo Jones Elliott Morton))

Salah Diaz Jota
((Nunez Gakpo Chiesa))

So first of all, let's remove their best 3 attacking midfielders e.g. Gravenberch Szoboslai Gakpo but of course we could choose any 3, I don't wanna debate that point. So we have to promote Jones and Elliott to the first team giving:

Alisson
((Kelleher))

Trent VVD Konate Robertson
((Bradley Gomez Quansah Tsimikas))

Jones Elliott MacAllister
((Endo Morton))

Salah Diaz Jota
((Nunez Chiesa))

Then let's remove all of their first teamers as though they were about to play a major cup final. That leaves us

Kelleher
Bradley Gomez Quansah Tsimikas
Endo Morton XXX
Nunez XXX Chiesa

OK maybe they can have Diaz back, since we did play Son.

But the point is, they have 1 or 2 slots they can't fill and would have to dig into their Academy but I can't recognise any of these names at all, can you? https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/academy

So YES our squad is pretty decent IMO, though it does need to mature of course.

Hmm, I can already sense some of you starting to respond with "yeah but they are way better than us" but that is not the point I'm trying to make.
I'm thinking about our squad depth and ability to make do without THREE AM's and without the ENTIRE first team vs Villa!

Do we think our team:
.......................Kinsky
Spence Danso Davies Reggie
.....................Gray Sarr
.......Moore Odobert Son
............................Tel

Is better than their team:
......................Kelleher
Bradley Gomez Quansah Tsimikas
..............Endo Morton XXX
.............Nunez Diaz Chiesa

It's a bit of a bummer when you do a long post and no one responds so I'll offer my tuppence.

Our squad depth is pretty good. We've got lots of tins of baked beans, rice and pasta in the store cupboard. Liverpool probably have a bit more fresh fruit, vegetables, anchovies, larks' tongues in aspic and marinated yak's appendices.

We've got a lot of young players with potential, and we all like to fantasise about them kicking on to become titans of the game but the odds are against it. Most will carve out decent careers as Premiership players but I would guess (and it is just a guess) only a couple will prove to be upgrades on what we have in the current first XI or could buy "off the shelf" from the usual suspects (relegated teams, selling teams, second-tier European teams).

As you say, strength in depth is good but I don't know how strong that strength is.

FWIW, I recently spent a lot of time with some Liverpool supporters and their view was the only player of ours who would make their squad would be Kulusevski. Of course, that suggests they overrate their fringe players and youth prospects as much as we do! :)

Thanks for that.
Pondering our youngsters who might prove to be upgrades on the current first XI... aged 21 or less...OK I put some 22s in brackets to fill it out.
I see what you mean about being better than the first teamers.
Let's hope several do that.
(Kinsky)
Vuskovic Phillips (Udogie)
Gray Bergvall Moore (Sarr)
Odobert Tel
Scarlett Lankshear

[[plus Yang Dorrington Devine Donley and other U21s and U18s of course]]

I think it’s a great squad.

Should be walking into top 4.

Really?

I get fans overestimate at times, but that is not a top 4 squad. We need a better midfielder for starters, who has some positional awareness and an eye for a pass would be helpful. We also need an upgrade on Solanke and/or a new LW who will chip on with goals as well.

Helpful to look at the squad as a whole. What we miss, in my view, is two or ideally three players who really make a difference. If you think of the Redknapp (Modric, Van der Vaart, Bale) and Poch (Kane, Alli, Eriksen) teams, they all had that extra bit of quality. We currently have a good squad, I agree. Kinsky, Udogie, Gray, Sarr, Moore are all extremely promising and in their late teens/early twenties. If we can keep them, keep them fit, and keep them together, more good things will happen, but for 25-26, this is not a top-4 squad.

What I think we need more than anything else is one or two players who are 'world class' (for want of a better term). Only Bergvall has that added star quality in the making I would argue, and Sonny used to of course. Perhaps Romero too, but I'm not sure about that. If we could, just for once, spend all our CL money on two very good players, the likes of Wirtz, Musiala, possibly Simons, or players of similar ilk. That would lift the youngsters and the other good players we already have to a higher level immediately.

I think you articulate what a lot of us feel. Poch's team had Harry, Eriksen, Walker, Toby/Jan, Dembele, Son, Dele etc. Ange's team is still about the collective with a few rising stars.

Interestingly, the only guy that seems to be able to win games on his own is Johnson.

I'm not sure where we find the 2 or 3 signature signings though.
