I can only think the playing down of the trophies that we can realistically win is to protect themselves from the banter of other fans and the "but it's only" phalanx.
Well the two trophies that we hanker after have only been won by two cheating clubs and one of the biggest clubs on the planet.
Is our winning the EL or any of the domestic cups any less an achievement than arsenals FA Cup, utds EL or Newcastles carabao Cup win?
It's bizarre.

Winning the EL is way better than the domestic cups, gets you in the CL.

The domestic cups are worthless.

Entering a semifinal means very little if you don't win it. Teams that lost cup finals will be remembered as failures, if anything at all, let alone semifinalists. To put that into context, Arteta will be seen to have another average season without a silverware if they don't go on to win the CL, even with the way they beat Real Madrid. I would reserve any talk of praise/achievement before winning the final, simple as that. Let's not act like the gooners and pretend we have won anything.

I didn't think we stand a chance in the EL with how the season panned out and I would be happily proven wrong. I can see some hope after last night. Now win the fudging thing and go, Ange.

If we do win it, it'll quickly go from "no trophies for 17 years" to "yeah but its the Europa League and you finished 15th"

What does winning it do?

It's a competition that Rangers got to the semi finals of. The only value left in this competition is nostalgia and memories of when it mattered.
I expect this nonsense from rival fans if we win it. Not from our own.

If we win the Europa, it's our biggest trophy in 34 years and arguably in the 40 years I've supported the club. It gets the trophy monkey off our back. It gets us into Champions League next season. It may provide belief and a springboard for more success.

If you need Spurs to win the League (which we've won twice in almost 150 years) or the Champions League (which we've never won in the 70 years) to get any joy from the club lifting silverware, you're likely to be disappointed for the rest of your days...

Do you really care what they say?

Anyway getting really ahead of ourselves. I remember the last semi we were in and the last final. The semis and finals before that.

Biggest since last time we won it.

We qualify for Europa League semis and some of us think it is nothing because our league position isn't good.
We need to enjoy being in a semi but also not let it blind us to the longer term issues highlighted by the poor performance in the league. We shouldn’t be so fickle as to change our position game to game.

Played like that three months ago and I would think most fans would still be behind him.
The encouraging part is that the players showed what they are capable of for next season and a new manager.
Exactly this. All I've asked of him is for some adjustment and he never showed it but then when everything is on the line he was willing to make concessions to his overall philosophy. Why he wouldn't do this at an earlier stage I don't know, as a fan ase wed understand and appreciate that some games or even at times in some games require a different approach.

You might look forward to seeing him save his job so we can be treated to another season of this (and another round of Russian roulette with our top-flight status); I don't, personally.
If you at all of my posts you'll see the polar opposite.
I was one of the earliest calling for a change - definitively from November.
But I still want to win the EL. And then say thank you Ange.
I actually think that would be ideal - he's shown he isn't an PL manager. That's for certain.
But a EL win will show he is more than just a Celtic manager.

We hired him because he has talent. A EL competitive manager is probably where he is at. And that's no shame.

EL win, Ange and THFC move in more compatible directions... Perfecto!

With Ange in charge? What's the point?

Without Ange would be the point, the best result in the world would be

- Ange wins EL
- In summer we "mutually agree" to part ways
- We move on last of loan players, release Werner, sell Bissouma, Richi, maybe Romero (for right offer)
- Bring in new manager
- Give new manager 120M (seems average now) +whatever comes in from sales
- Use CL to attract those players
- Start over one more time.

Lots of if's in there, would require we actually win, would require a lot of guts from the club to move on a cup winning manager (and they would need to ride the backlash and have a good replacement ready to go).

I think you're letting your memories of what this competition used to be cloud modern reality.

In terms of difficulty to win, I'd rank it well below both the domestic cups. Look who else is in it. Utd (similarly placed to us and currently brick) and two teams who are 4th-6th in two horse leagues.

It's a great competition to win for PL relegation candidates but I'm not going to let our current predicament influence my view of how prestigious a 2nd rate European is.

I agree.

Worst case scenario is that performance in a meh competition means we keep a manager who is drowning.
