The Game Is About Glory Podcast

I must admit i am not really a dog lover [ more of a cat man] but i got one of these back in the day. I used to be away from home a lot and we had young kids and the area was not the best so i decided to buy a guard dog. i got the Doberman because i was advised that allthough they are the perfect guard dog they were good with kids which was important.

2 Step Forward, 1 Step Back
Season 5 Episode 17

Steff, Milo and Gareth discuss the disappointment of Palace, the Alkmaar win, how we love Moore and Moore and Moore (you have to sing that!) and discuss how appalling our behaviour was against West Ham. Fine? Yes, but not really. Saddle up for the ride...

Dom Dishes Up Humiliation
Season 5 Episode 18

Steff and Milo are joined by Ram -who passed a late fitness test having returned from witnessing the 4-1 thumping of Aston Villa a little hoarse for wear- to discuss both the aforementioned emphatic victory, and the defeat of Emirates Marketing Project earlier in the week. It’s all fun fun fun.

It's going to be this again, isn't it? Plus a dash of now we have to mull that over next two weeks post Brighton

Bad Habits
Season 5 Episode 19

Steff, Milo, and Gareth sink their teeth into the Ipswich and Galatasaray matches, find the perfect space between a bit of a grumble, and common sense perspective, take a view on the Hugo Lloris autobiography, and quite literally sing the praises of our relationship with Westerlo! If you don’t feel better afterwards, have another Guinness and listen again!

It's okay, this time the players and staff will learn from it. I have a theory that we're intentionally losing this many games to maximise learning opportunities, once we've got enough knowledge in the bank and manage to get our belief levels at the right level as well we'll definitely go on a run from there on in (unless Mason has took over by that point, in which case we start again and can have another couple of years of the excuse of a new manager coupled with the need to learn and improve belief levels). Repeat the process until we the fans have all passed away, unless we already have and are indeed stuck in purgatory, another theory to ponder over the international break....

You mean this is not purgatory?
Damn, that was my only hope.

Said it yesterday
Ange may not know how much these two weeks hurt him and the view fans have of him
He is getting the blame, because of his role in the set up, for players failing to do the basics
He called it after the game and said it’s on him

Why Don't We Win Things?
Season 5 Episode 20

Steff, Milo, and Gareth look at our recent record in the cups and ask why we struggle to win them? Why have the FA and League Cups been such barren lands for Spurs since the start of the Premier League? What changed and why do a handful of big clubs dominate the cups now?

I tried my best to go into this one with an open mind - Despite my best efforts, colour me triggered ;)

The first half seemed to be a thesis on why trophies are stupid and it's not fair anyways so why bother. Wait till Milo hears how "worthless" it is to win a gold medal at the Olympics - Remember kids, if there isn't a huge fiscal reward, it isn't worth doing.

Steff you did bring it back around a few times by saying we as fans do at least want those days out / experiences, I am envious of you having been there for the games you have, they are moments in history that cannot be taken away. And I am with Gareth on how being in the CL at first was a huge thing, but the novelty has worn off. Not on calling Jose's habit of winning trophies a vanity project, winning stuff is literally what he is / was paid to do. Always told that we need CL to take the next step but then the next season when we struggle CL is used as part of the reason we didn't do well because of too many games, the never ending cycle of false promises.

Does a league cup ensure a sustainable future moving into the upper echelons of the footballing elite? Of course not. But what it means is that we would have entered a competition and by the parameters set about by whichever board or football association, been declared the winner of that competition. It's not the be all and end all and we can't expect to win anything, but to pretend it's just a 50/50 chance x by how many rounds their are as opposed to a result of effort, planning, teamwork and of course luck, it's beyond me. If I'm taking that point too literally I apologise Milo but that summary / assertion just doesn't add up - Perhaps I have completely missed the point on that one, I'm always open to that possibility.

If the ambition for the foreseeable is to be a bit more like Arsenal when they weren't anywhere near as good but were still just about clinging on to champions league qualification, to me that's a rather downbeat view. Football should be about hope and joy (and heartbreak and traumabonding), not the main hope being whatever gets us the best financial reward at that time.

As for there being "no evidence" for a club winning a trophy leading them to another, take Sevilla winning 3 ELs in a row. They were good enough to win it once, so the club / players / coaching staff had the knowhow required to go an do it again. Our lot evidently don't have that. When Conte said the board are happy just to be in the mix for top four everyone kicked off but you guys seem to think the same. Ange has a hell of job on if the players have the same mentality, especially given his "winning things in his second season with clubs" which was a fairly ballsy comment to make.

I wasn't expecting to tune in for an hour of Spurs having the tinkle taken out of referring to Son at LB or having Mason in charge instead of Jose for a cup final he had dragged the team into as you are above that but it did seem like some defense mechanisms rather than a real look into it. I am sorry if I have gone in a bit too hard here gents as I usually enjoy the pod, it's of course fine to have different opinions on it and at the end of the day doesn't affect what happens. If this looks like a drunken rant I promise I am sober! However I was doing a bit of painting whilst listening and found a fair bit of the discourse that didn't resonate with me at all. It's a subject that has been done to death and even the would you rather hypotheticals, if only it was as easy as choosing to win something....

Interesting pod, didn't turn out how I was expecting it to.
Big reason for me is that we are struggling with our identity/place in the hierarchy.
We are not, have not been and are a few years away from being a league title winning club.
Same with the CL.
The club appear accept this but can't quite get their head around us challenging for the domestic cups.
EL is an after thought.
Us fans feel we should be challenging for the title but deep down know we can't.
We feel the cups are beneath us and again EL is an after thought.

We have in my opinion a
10% chance of winning the PL
15% chance of winning the CL, should we qualify of course.
25% chance of winning either domestic cup
50% chance at the EL.
Assuming we take that particular competition seriously on an individual basis.

I would quite gladly take a couple of EL wins with 8-5 place league finishes over the next 4-5 years.
That is the competition we should be concentrating on, along with a respectable league position.

This is a good post with lots of valid points.
But for balance, I wanted to mention that the pod did resonate and I did agree with the points they made.

I want Spurs to be a really toppety top team, and to achieve that we need to bring in shedloads of revenue and spend it wisely. So the main route to that is to get CL money, as that is where all the money is. Then we have a CHANCE to spend it wisely and not waste it.
Cups are nice, but I want us to be toppety topmost for a sustained period of time, say 2 or 3 hundred years.

It was another fantastic podcast, and kudos to the guys for keeping it fresh all the time.

What I felt is that it encouraged more fans to have the fact based reality check and lose their romance of the cup, replacing it instead with pragmatism. I felt there was almost a resignation that us fans have no chance of reinstating the cup to its former glories and we shouldn't worry if we don't win it. I find that an incredibly tough perspective. However, the reality is that each year there is only 1 winner from the 745 teams that enter. Those winners only come from a few elite clubs, with only a few exceptions.......and the domestic cups don't line your pockets.

I think there are a few other themes that are important here.

The first is whether we had more chance of winning a cup in Poch's 5 years or the 5 years after. For me, the answer is the former when there has been stability at our club.

The second is understanding better how other mangers, especially Pep, manage their cup success. It isn't just about having a deeper and more talented squad.

The other clubs do rotation way better than we do. If they make mass changes, it's because they have instilled a football philosophy through then entire 25 man squad and beyond into the U21s and U18s. It means every player is equipped to just slot in. If they don't feel that, they make minimal changes. Spurs have been incredibly arrogant across multiple managers and have made up to 8 changes for cup games and got exactly what they deserved. There have thrown a bunch of strangers on the pitch at the same time. We've approached the games wrongly, in the early tenures of managers.

Then you have my final point and that is about senior player motivation. We've seen so many bottle job players over the years, with the most recent being the AC Milan game and our much loved Harry Kane. Our vice captain should have been thoroughly ashamed at the attitude he crossed the white line with that evening. He knows he never got himself up for that must win game. He didn't show for the ball, he didn't run and he wasn't fit to wear our shirt that evening. Nobody talked about it though. It was all on Conte, the manager. We've been there so many times with so many senior players over the years. Harry was just one player in a long list that bottled it when we needed him most. When you look at the teams that win cups, they have real talismanic personalities who really step up in the 90 mins. I can't say we really have when I think back to our best players like Kane, Son, Eriksen, Dembele and others. They've disappeared.
