It didnt stop the vindictive elements in Scottish football putting Rangers in the bottom tier.
There are so many ifs, buts and maybe's and they will fuel the myriad of weird proposals put forward on the internet.
Nobody will know what will happen until the sanctions are published. I have no expectation that that the punishment will be as severe as many do, life is not fair and the rich and powerful usually get an easy ride.

What happened with Rangers? Were they expelled from the SPL (and then had to start at the bottom) or were they relegated several divisions?

The PL can only relegate City one division through a points deduction, as the EPL is a separate body. On the other hand, if City were expelled from the PL, then they might have to start again in the 6th or 7th tiers.

Given City will appeal any proportionate sanction, I wonder if there is a deal to be made. City drop the appeal in exchange for a large points deduction and relegation. One year out of the PL would be manageable.

Would that be enough for the PL? I'm not sure City would they also accept voiding/stripping the titles, but doing that also complicates matters for the PL. The PL administration might want it to go away, although the clubs might not.

We were paying players under the counter bonuses from a bank in Jersey which broke all kinds of rules.

We were still paying players from the 80s who had left the club and wrote of all sorts of "loans" in the 90s.

This will create a political hot potato IMO. UAE investment in the UK is close to 40bn currently, props up loads of industries, there will be plenty of skullduggery at play here before this is resolved.

If they did decide they were going to relegate City then when do they do it? If they allow them to stay in the PL this year a situation could be created in which any clubs due to be relegated in May could claim that any points lost against City should be restored to them. That could potentially have a huge impact on the relegation situation at that point.

I mean, I also read all this.
If there is anything close to a fair punishment in a reasonable timeframe I will be shocked.

I know what we did. But there was no premier league back then. So you can't equate the two. As it is a totally different governing body and different rules now.

This suggests they can appeal the verdict, although they would need genuinely new evidence.

... Under Premier League rules, City would have 14 days from the announcement of the verdict to submit an appeal and the process that follows should be completed in less than 12 weeks from then. Once the appeal has been heard – which should happen in one block of no more than five days – and a verdict reached, the appeal panel are also expected to publish written reasons behind their decisions. We should also see the written reasons from the original judicial panel too, but the unique scale of this case has meant that normal procedures have not always been followed, and the date of publication for these reasons remains unknown.

I imagine it will be Via a points deduction.

I would also imagine the PL have been in conversation with the FL about having them starting in League 2 and how/if it would work

The point I am making is we committed the same crimes in using money under the table to reward players. How and the details may differ, but the motivation and what happened is the same

I imagine virtually every club in he leagues has played players or their associates "illegal" payments. I've played for an amateur and Sunday league teams who paid "boot money".
