I think its much simpler than that, we just have never been a club that has had consistent success as part of its mantra, always had a soft underbelly. Absolutely had our glory nights but never sustained. Players are not silly, they know that and its hard to change any kind of culture when a clubs been the same for 60 years.

Its not a coincidence that someone like Romero wins everything at international level in a set up full of players who are like rabid dogs who want to win and now at a club with a manager who is the same, sitting second, whilst we continue to languish. People can kid themselves on how and why its always us, but we have been through countless evolutions and its always us, thats not just bad luck

BTW I am not saying you are saying this, I am just making a statement
You can change the culture in any organisation. It just takes a collective will to promote, and indeed enforce, the new culture. To do it you absolutely have to get rid of some people, and often they are people who have been around for a long time.

I think it was reasonably clear last season that many of the players didn’t buy into Thomas Frank and the culture quickly turned to players not giving their all (as well as the captain being late for training and openly criticising the club.

I think De Zerbi knows we need to change the culture at Spurs and is trying to do so. I think the board and owners are bought into this and trying to help him achieve it. The culture change has started with players that are not bought into and want out being allowed to go, and often for a price that many on here perceive to be below their ‘fair’ value.

I hope De Zerbi gets the chance to continue with what he is trying to achieve, though I’m not convinced a noisy portion of the fan base will give him the time and I’ve got no real sample size so no idea yet on whether the new owners and board are patient or trigger happy.

Kane went on strike, think that kinda let the cat out of the bag rather than keeping it in house and playing through it. A clear message was delivered to us all.

Social media wasn’t a thing when Mabbutt wanted to go to the scum and Hoddle left.

I don’t think players having right to reply is a bad thing. Respect is a two way street.
And what did the club do about it? Nothing!…. The team captain unilaterally decides he doesn’t want to return to training with the rest of the squad and he doesn’t even get fined. There is evidence of a poor culture at the club (both the fact the player felt empowered to do it and the club’s response). Irrespective of the fact that the best centre forward in the world had given us many of his best years had seen several years of fudge ups from above and just had a farcical manager search play out in front of him, the action he took still cannot be tolerated. That culture needs to change, it appears to me that the current manager is trying to change it. Good for him.

Thats all fair, the issue comes IMO that in this day and age I don't think players respond to the type of things I am seeing outwardly although I accept it may be different inwardly. What I Just don't believe is that because he is targeting players that we all don't like (Tel, Richy etc) that its something that will work overall. Lets see I hope he does change the culture, the most important culture is the one where wins become a habit and this clubs steps over winning lines more often, if that happens the rest gets pulled along with it IMO

The culture surrounding Kane skipping off was ultimately based on not winning games of football.

I like Tel. I think he has all of the attributes to become a very good player. Richi has never had the attributes to be anything other than a middling PL player (though I appreciate us being a middling PL club would seem a big step up from where we were last season).

I don’t think the manager is targeting certain players, I think he is targeting a certain culture. He wants all of the players wanting to be here, wanting to listen, learn and improve and bought in and wanting to be a part of a successful club. As a leader you can’t achieve success if you keep somebody around who is not bought in to the vision.

As you say a ‘winning culture’ is the most important thing. It doesn’t just happen though, it has to be created. Look at Thomas Frank, he had a really good start, I suspect it fooled a few fans into thinking he had created a winning culture, but he’d done nothing of the sort and it was telling how quickly it unravelled.

De Zerbi may end up unsuccessful at Spurs but I think he is at least starting with the basics of only wanting those who are bought in and want to be here, the board have backed him with buys, sells and a £20m asset left out of the squad. It might not work but it is at least the right start if we really do want to try to create a sustained winning culture. I genuinely don’t think the previous regime would’ve done that same thing which basically puts the manager on the back foot straight away.

As I'm sure you know, a winning culture starts at the very top. I've often wondered whether Tavistock and ENIC can have a winning football culture when their business model is invest to grow. In football you almost invest to break even or lose. Even the FFP /PSR model is about only losing so much money each fiscal year. That's why it is a billionaires playground nowadays.

For me, Levy never had a winning football culture as he defined success differently from winning trophies. That permeated through his entire organisation and it was always the managers that got beaten up for his culture, not himself. I'm not saying though that the managers can have massive influences on the culture. They are the most important person at the club. The problem becomes when a player has a problem with the manager, they revert to the chairman's culture. Kane did exactly this. He became bigger than the club and then within a year or two we hade prima donnas like Hojbjerg and Aurier who thought it was OK to be walking across the halfway line as the ball hit our net. Then Hiojbjerg thinks he is bigger than the club and should be playing CL football in the summer even though he became the reason we didn't have it.

I wish Roberto the best in doing his bit to change the culture. I'm happy for him to be Fergie like in his standards. Most importantly, I'm hoping Charrington, Vinai and the siblings have more about them than Levy in this regard.
