At present I would be playing Gallagher as the 10. With Fernandes deep and Tonali box to box. While Gallagher isn’t a creative passer, I think his runs into the box would be useful and he would also compliment the team’s press.

Until we are either brave or mature enough as a team, we need a couple of leaders on the pitch. Keeping Palhinha for another season as we wait for our signings to either 'find fitness' or rhythm or both would most certainly have benefitted us in terms of on-pitch leadership. I accept that long-term he is not the answer to any long frame questions, but right now he would be very, very useful in helping navigate our current situation. I mean, DeZerbi seems immune to playing Tonali and Fernandes together right now. Maybe the decision was that Bentancur can be the Palhinha?

I think that’s a gamble worth trying
Bentacur has been our best player imo
But I really like what I saw of Tonali yesterday and Fernandes had to start deeper for me

Several times on Saturday Bentancur received the ball with an easy turn forward to be driving forward into space but instead played a quick pass backwards. I’d have him on in the second half if we’re protecting a lead but would rather see Fernandes and Tonali starting as the 6/8 pair.

I always thought that was the idea
But IMO Bentacur has been our best player upto yesterday
He, as manager, has big calls to make and these are ones he should try

People in this thread are talking about missing Palhinha when midfield whatever the numbers hasn't been the issue. I can't see how adding Palhinha into these starting lineups as some are suggesting we could have done would make any difference when his absence isn't something we are feeling.

It's a bigger thing than just the position.
We do not seem ready yet -for physical or whatever reasons- to play the midfield De Zerbi wants to play and allows(say) Fernandes to make this his team and develop as a leader (he has it in him). Until then, it is about a presence in the side.
When people such as you talk about the Danso thing, I would agree absolutely in the spirit of fighters/PMA characters. To let Palhinha and him both go/make clear to them we don't feel we need them (plus Richy in the same regard FWIW) puts immediate pressure on the current incumbents to stand up...and right now, we need more than Gallagher to do precisely that until everything settles (which realistically won't be for a while)...

We discussed this on the pod, and I said the same given how De Zerbi seems to want a 10...this after last week wondering what Gallagher does LOL!!!
