***OMT - Tottenham Hotspur v The Garibaldis (will Marinakis eat his own club with a cuppa?), Sat Sept 5th, City Ground, 3pm***

Not new indeed but think the amount of deliberate cheating is increasing as is the acceptability of it as being part of the game. The cheating is dismissed and diminished far more than it was and so more occurs.

I think its just more obvious now because everything is televised from multiple angles.

I was coached as a kid about standing on defenders toes, backing in, throwing an elbow during corners, kids don't get coached that now.

I think the same amount of deliberate cheating* goes on, but different things.

*in the PL, if you are not penalised for it, its not cheating, because the officials have seen it

I forgot to add this to the thread earlier …

Liam Delap is a disgrace to football. A talentless thug, gobby brick and all-round nasty p.o.s.

Tried the same no-look, elbow first challenge on JVPH at least once which broke Spence’s jaw last time. Unsurprisingly the ref did nothing but the club should highlight this to Webb’s lot (whatever they are called this week), even though I know they won’t.

I don’t normally condone revenge tackles, but am willing to make an exception for him.

PS - just listened to the newest pod and glad to hear I’m not the only who has this opinion!

Just been thinking recently about how rubbish some aspects of the game have become, the lack of integrity and the normalisation of cheating.

Williams knew what had happened but was happy to go with that. Fair enough, but if caught out then there should be a sanction.
Rice with his 'clever' 'tactical' foul on Rogers - this is a deliberate breaking of the laws of the game. It should be a straight red, no matter how innocuous. Someone has chosen to deliberately break the rules.

yellow cards for accidental tackles that go wrong and stuff but deliberate rule breaking , that lack of integrity, should be red.

I think any bookings given where the other player clearly dives should be overturned retrospectively. Can’t remember if Fernandes got booked for his phantom tackle on Wissa, but things like that is what I mean.

It’s noticeable in the clip of Kudus above that once the defender realises he’s beaten he first swings his leg as far as he can, but misses, and then turns to attempt a rugby tackle (but misses).

All just “normal” in the game now. If he did manage to rugby tackle him then at worst it’s a yellow, but maybe if the defender makes it look like he’s falling over you might get away with it.

Deliberate rugby tackles, hands around the waist (Arse do it all the time) and diving should all have bigger punishments imo. These things don’t happen by accident, so should be easy to police.

Presume he means where there is zero contact, and the player goes does like a sniper attack.

I would like to see a 1 match ban for the most obvious of these.

Doesn’t have to be contact for it to be a foul.

Say you are dribbling towards me, I’m the last defender, my team is losing, I decide I’m taking you out. I lunge fully attempting to bring you down. I have committed a foul.

You however are fleet of foot and manage to evade my tackle and retain balance. I still committed a foul, it’s just that you managed to evade it.

You are now one on one with the keeper, but your head quickly calculates the situation (before you take your next step) and you realise that if you go down, I’m getting a red card and you get a FK which can be used to waste a lot of time, that’s worth more to your team than a one on one with our keeper, who has a 30% chance of stopping you.

So you go down, it’s the smart thing to do.

I fouled you. It’s a FK, but you still dived, and I should still have been sent off.

I did indeed, the one where Wissa clearly leaps into the air and winds a free kick against Fernandes, it’s not a foul - just a blatant dive and should be given a retrospective yellow after the game.

Cheating should be punished, not encouraged.
