The Falklands

Hopefully FIFA applies the rules as strictly to those players who held up the Malvinas flag on Wednesday…

Also banned spanish players for a march for a flag saying Gibraltor is Spanish.

Be very amusing if they maintained the sanction. Assume they will deal with this after Sunday though

Yes, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that we did put people there, those people have had children, all perfectly reasonable.

Populating an area, then standing behind a vote by that population has some caveats.

We talking about the Falklands or Argentina 🤣

It will come after the tournement.

So, long drive today*, left Ashford at 5 am and am now at Montmarault. Well now as in after dejeuner and a few glasses of the local brew.
Wrong thread I hear you cry, but actually no.
On said long drive** I had plenty of time to ruminate and ponder.
Thinking about the England result, the argies holding up banners and the general whole winners and losers, nationalist clams and the righteous.
Is there a correlation between the "shame" England feel for their colonial past and their failures*** in sport in general due to not wanting to have have the bad person tag attached to them.
It doesn't seem to bother any of the other colonial powers (not saying any were better or worse than others or that because one did it it was ok for others).
Other countries appear to be able to deal with patriotism hugely better than England.
Is it a factor?

* long drives are bad for your mental health.

** drove down France, through Paris in the time it takes to get anywhere within 40 miles of London. WTF is that all about. And French drive like maniacs, worst still their roads full of Dutch who drive like maniacs on speed. My wife asked why the Dutch have yellow number plates, I told her it was a warning.

*** yes, yes, yes the Scots and sporting failure, I know.

So plenty of sabre rattling from the Argentinian President the last couple of days.

I think he might be pushing the 'urgent' narrative as I think he sees Trump as potentially onboard with him. The 'urgency' angle comes from Trump facing the mid terms soon and maybe not as powerful post those results

In truth, Trump is just being a man baby about us not fully supporting him with the mess he's created with Iran. Probably as shallow as just wanting to 'get us back'

Hasn't he plundered them into a financial slump? Good distraction if so....learning off the best

I think they've been in a financial slump for ages...

Look at the 10 year inflation and peso/dollar currency exchange chart and you'll wonder how they keep going.

But it's a wealth inequality story....so you might have to do something if you want to be re-elected if you've squeezed more and more of the middle classes into not liking you as they're skint... and lost their vote as a consequence

Just another nationalist football that is punted about to cover up for failing governments, failing economies and failing popularity. The history of The Falkland Islands is incredibly complex. Another complicated hangover from our expanding Empire. It has been something that has been drummed into the modern psyche of Argentinians with some clever efforts through the UN in the mid 60s. They were successful in getting the UN (those guys who let a million Rawandans die on their watch) to coerce us to negotiate with Argentina based on the accusation that we had colonised the islands from Argentina. Argentina on gaining independence made a proclamation that they owned the Islands because they had expelled the Spanish from 'Argentina' and therefore gained their colonial territories. The chap who claimed the islands, for the then 'United Provinces of The River Plate', (or raggle taggle collection of thieves, murderers, footy cheats and war criminals as some see them) was actually an American mercenary. Britain had already laid claim to the Islands, as had others but had withdrawn their administration due to economic difficulties. We naturally objected to the 'Argentinian' claim, probably on the grounds they had never had a presence there at any stage, oh and Argentina itself didn't even exist (I added that bit...). Argentina then, in our eyes, illegally settled and claimed the islands. Our objections were ignored and a decade later we retook the islands and have administered them as a British Crown Colony ever since. Of course in 1982 Argentina invaded the islands using force and lost the war that followed. This was seen as a national shame and it has been a valuable tool for tinpot dictators ever since. Obviously the islands have self-determination and voted to maintain the status quo. With the US looking at a spot of modern Empire Building in the final scramble for global resources, they'll be very keen to build ties with anyone who may potentially have access to untapped resources in their coastal waters.

Don't tell me it's all about oil, again.

The best moment for humanity.....will be the moment the black stuff runs out.

I have a funny feeling, that when it does run out, there will be another resource for the same greedy bastards to fight to control. There is no money in things running on something that is free to collect. It is always about the coin. The Falklands are all about the oil and the coin. I think Sea Lion is the first field to come online soon.

When did it start becoming about the oil?
