Lack of trust + insatiable need for speed = disaster

The media landscape has dramatically changed but the influence that those those traditional media outlets have over government officials who enact policy has not fallen away at the same rate as their viewership and reader figures.

For purpose of discussion, I just want to be sure we have the same definition of 'traditional media' i.e. newspapers (nearing obsoletion sadly), TV and radio.

To clarify my previous point. It’s not actually the experts that are the issue. We should trust the experts. But the mechanism for how their knowledge is shared is deeply flawed. Which is why I would push back on you taking issue with someone listening to the podcast host over a news presenter or journalist. What’s the actual difference between them? They will each take the information provided by the experts and regurgitate it in a way that fits the narrative demanded by their audience or by the paymasters.

A very fair point, however I think we also have to consider two factors here. 1, the assumption that it is knowledge versus opinion which is being shared. 2, the underwriter of said-knowledge/opinion. Journalism as an example...it was once a profession where there were many noble and very honest people whose work was left to speak for itself on its own merits. Sadly (as it appears we both agree) the scope for honest journalism is smaller than ever. It is now a 'conditioning loop' whereby more than ever we get fed what we want to see and read, which includes stories on current affairs. Yes, there is a point at which I'd agree that whether you listen to (say) the BBC or Joe Rogan could simply be a case of suiting your own agenda, however I'd further say that even in finding outlets which suit your agenda, I'd rather have it be one which is still answerable to bodies like OFCOM. The likes of Joe Rogan answer to no-one. I think that's dangerous. I also think the proof of that has been shown. I'd also add that if there is a 'traditional left' as you seem to believe, then they should be smarter at availing themselves of the Rogans of this world as that is (sadly IMO) the main route to political success.

If anything I would say the Podcast landscape is more likely to give the floor to the experts via a long form interview. As well as being more likely to have conversations with people they and their audience disagree with.

I like podcasts as a medium. I like them for perspective. I don't like to rely on them for news above everything else.

Also why I find it strange that the Fauci story this week would be chalked up as yesterdays news by you and MAGA grift conspiracy theories by others.

It was going so well until you had to throw that little dig LOL.
First of all, it is a FACT. It IS yesterday's news. In fact it is more than that.

Because that is a perfect example of how, in the background the scientists and experts are doing fantastic and noble work, but what ends up being projected to the public via politicians, the media and in Faucis case public health officials ranged from misleading and at times outright lies.

However, the example is being hung on one man. One. In your 'quest for truth from public health officials' don't you think it'd be a tiny bit more plausible if there was a full-scale look at ALL parties who were working on covid19 from (say) November 2019? Like the President, Alazar, Refield, Pence, Hahn? Maybe others too? Sorry, the enquiry does not pass the threshold of trust for me with regards to why it is taking place.

If you look at wealth inequality as the example now being discussed here. The focus is entirely on taxation of individuals. From the media, and therefore also the public, there is virtually zero conversation about who controls the monetary supply.

I would agree that should absolutely be part of the conversation.

The Bank of England play a far greater role in wealth inequality than rich people who pay a lower marginal tax rate than the middle and working class. But very very few people understand the lack of control and regulatory power the British Government holds over BofE which similarly exists in most western countries.

As do the corporations who own governments.

Fwiw I put far more thoughts on a regular basic in to this and how it will impact society and peoples lives than as an example Fauci telling lies. That just happened to be a big part of the news cycle this week. The lack of financial litiracy from people taking on debt. The inability to save money for retirement.

Finance is therefore obviously a passion for you. Great stuff. And I absolutely agree with what you say here. Financial literacy, and the way in which people are prevented from gaining it via the system, lack of education and continued wealth inequality perpetrated by large corporations, is a disgrace.

But what really keeps me up at night is that even people who are sensible with their finances are still getting wiped out by decisions made by Central Banks who we as the voters have almost no control over via our elected officials. Something that if the public understood would have near complete alignment from left and right as well.

100% agree with you on this. It is ugly. Almost hopeless in some senses. I think along those lines, watching the manipulation of global economies by government to enrich certain sponsors is alarming. That so few people seem bothered is troubling, albeit I think there is so much being thrown at people that they simply cannot process it. People have, via social media, become junkies for emotional reactions to momentary situations, which takes energy and focus away from important transgressions of rights and liberties.

I think there are still a lot of wonderful investigative journalists out there. Martyn Ziegler at the times with his uncovering of the FIFA private equity play this week as an example. But I think that suffers from audience capture to an extent as well where people won’t want to pay attention to a story if it goes agains the left and right side.

Havent the BBC faced a ton of issues with OFCOM in recent years due to political bias?

I don’t really agree about the lack of regulation to be honest. For a few reasons. Independent podcasts are not as beholden to a paymaster the way traditional media will be.

I think the audience and advertisers are the ultimate regulator as well Rogan does huge numbers but does not have any mainstream advertisers. As I understand CNN charges more per viewer than Fox News even though Fox gets 2-3x the viewership. Conservative independent media gets a much larger audience than liberal media but the liberal shows get more mainstream advertisers. Look at PSA vs Tucker he is getting 3-4x the views.

You are right but I do think we need to seperate the major multi national corporations in the fortune500 from your corps that employ 500-10000 people though. They often get grouped together and that’s not really fair. Group in the major banks with those mega corps as well.

Yes.

A Rogan podcast featuring one of the more dubious members of government...dangerous stuff IMO.

Not sure why this was your response…My own expiriences with peptides has been great though.

Mine too...I received the necessary information and advice from my Doctor, not Joe Rogan or any other podcaster. They require very specific instructions which only someone who knows your physical health and metabolic make-up can determine. Rogan appears to want more immediate deregulation. Do you see careful regulation as 'big pharma' strangling the system?

Not really sure what I said to get this type of response. Maybe you can clear that up. Otherwise il just leave it.

Sorry?
You appear to be taking this as something 'personal' Rob? Rest-assured, if I am going to level an insult I'll be blunt. I don't hide. If you are referring to the question at the end, be specific and note that. It is, FWIW, a genuine question. If you find it somehow pejorative or insulting, that is your take.

It's pretty simple. The point I am making is that I would rather trust qualified people in their fields over unqualified people with platforms (such as Rogan). It's a personal choice. That's what I was explaining.
IMO, the manipulation of the public into trusting unqualified people over qualified is dangerous and a tool of those who wish to continue to sew seeds of division. Can qualified people be untrustworthy? Absolutely. But I'll take my chances...

There remains great anger in this country specifically over covid. It is a far, far greater conversation than spacegoating a qualified man for something he may or may not have done. To this day there are people who deny lockdown was necessary and who still try to claim that anyone who took the vaccine is an idiot who was 'manipulated themselves' by a big pharma conspiracy. It's absurd IMO...BTW, I of course believe there was fraud and financial chicanery during covid, as the phrase goes 'no good crisis should go to waste' and in such a steroided capitalist world, well, it was inevitable...

Yeh I don’t really get the tone shift from what was developing in to an interesting conversation .Il just leave it.

From what I have see , when faced with a genuine conversation that embraces more than a single element mono-focus, you retreat quickly citing some sort of inferred prejudice against you. I am not sure why.

(This post has been edited for clarity and to try and avoid any potential perceived insult)

This would make sense if I had brought up Joe Rogan and was actively defending him. You brought him up and I have not defended him. So what exactly am I retreating from?

Perhaps this is about how a post is perceived and processed?

Joe Rogan is, IMO, the single-biggest influence on 'nu politics' in the last decade+. He was chiefly an athlete/martial artist, who developed a strong enough voice and personality to become a prime vehicle of information for a huge swathe of disenfranchised people as well as others who had been led to believe that all mainstream media was evil and that government (specifically Obama) were not to be trusted. He became the voice of those who wanted a 'new' type of 'politician', one who was 'of the people for the people and not the system'.

It's an admirable aim in some ways. Systems are certainly going to have issues, and some will involve corruption. Sadly, I don't believe any system is pure, and expecting as such is utopian IMV.

It then becomes a case of where you want to place your main level of trust. In that sense, a healthy balance is always good, but when push comes to shove, you have to make decisions, most specifically in matters of public health. And those choices must (IMO) be based on as much accurate information as possible (which for me comes from those who have studied for many years) versus opinions, commentators and aggregators. We can splice this into several different levels of detail, but for simplicity's sake, let's just say that in such matters we choose to either adhere to knowledge of accredited professionals in their field, or unaccredited commentators not in said-field.

Covid was, IMO, a huge unknown which unfolded by the day and happened on the watch (in this nation) of a President who has proven to be one of the most politically vindictive, and franchise-minded, world leaders on record. He opposed lockdown on the basis of its economic impacts. Joe Rogan repeatedly expressed how he felt lockdown was unnecessary.

Fauci is said to have privately encouraged swift lockdowns and similar measures, whilst publicly he was rather more reserved in stating what he felt needed to happen. Given what we've just learnt about how the POTUS felt, not to mention the groundswell of public opinion against lockdown, it's pretty easy to hypothesize a dozen reasons why this might've happened.

I sort of understand lack of trust in lockdowns, because for a few years people such as Rogan had expressed repeated opinions that systemic interference existed already; the idea of lockdown, plus exploding conspiracy theories about vaccines, meant that during covid there was a perfect storm of paranoia where covid was essentially either a 'big pharmaceutical scam', a general scam by 'them', or a way of making sure that the levers of mass control could be exercised whenever necessary...or a combination of all them!!!

Personally? I have always done a lot of reading on a variety of matters, which at least gives me some confidence in the decisions I make with regards to things like public health (bear in mind, I am still ignorant of many things!)...repeatedly, through my own experiences and also observations, I have seen both the medical and health professions in general as containing very decent people whose main interest is in the thrust of their jobs. Covid 19 came from relatively nowhere, and in a culture which demands fast answers and instant villains, the situation was immediately pretty desperate. As the scramble to achieve a base of knowledge on origin, actual disease identity, and cure ensued, I can only imagine the chaos was huge and the answers in some cases shifting daily as more data became available.

Already, the likes of Rogan and others had bedded in such distrust generally, that any shift from statements made maybe only days earlier was seen as malevolence at work, of some conspiratorial action designed to fudge us over. I don't think that was largely the case. I think the truth is a lot of people were scrambling to do the right thing.

What is fascinating it that the worst operators were a government that consistently said it was not airborne for some time, and the various bottom-feeders in and around government who made sure they did not let a good crisis go to waste and ended up making millions upon millions from federal money. Yet somehow, amidst this entire complex scenario, we are now being focused on whether Fauci said things in diary which did not reflect his public opinions? As if determining this fact will 'solve' something? I think it is pathetic. Absolutely pathetic AND disingenuous. It has (IMO) nothing to do with 'demanding truth' and everything to do with sticking a head on a spike to parade around the town square. And in that regard, I think it is a colossal waste of time, unless it's going to be an 'all-in' investigation. Which it clearly was never going to be.

I have already written about the path I chose. So far so good. The truth is, thanks to the actions of others, much of what I did would've been rendered useless if covid19 had been instantly and virulently fatal. An example. As the first shows after lockdown started to occur in Spring of 2022, my lot went to South America, starting in Chile. We were required to wear N95 masks for all travel. The DAY we left on our commercial flight (they went charter) the mask-on-plane rule became non-mandatory. I spent the connecting flight from LA seated next to someone with a cough, and behind me was an elderly woman who I remain convinced hacked up a piece of lung. At that point, there was little to do other than hope the latest round of vaccine I had taken would prove to be a barrier (I did not get sick).

So, in short, yes, I have little time for the likes of Joe Rogan as experts on how to live my life. He is a very good raconteur and has had a great range of guests on his show. He is not, however, who I turn to for life advice.
For that matter, neither is Kennedy, a man desperately out of his depth IMO. My biggest issue with him is not that he was into heroin at one point or snorted drugs off a toilet seat; that's noise. It is the fact he holds title as the head of an office for which he has no formal qualifications! Personally, I am not a fan of this sort of thing...it's a bit like when entertainers and reality TV stars become leaders. I am fine with life experience in a field alongside some credentials, even as the main component in some circumstances, however in Kennedy's case, environmental lawyer to health czar is a bit of a stretch.

You stated that you did feel podcasts being ingested as 'news sources' was an issue, and said you had no issue with the lack of regulation surrounding them.
Your opinion.
Everything I wrote in reply was my opinion.

Final thought...we are now firmly in a world where the initial fear of government overreach and malfeasance has become a firm truth. It's not even 'meet the new boss, same as the old boss', it's 'be careful what you wish for' for all those who threw rocks at Obama and Biden. No-one is ever squeaky in politics, that's how they get there in the first place, but some do genuinely have a political ego that sees them want to be remembered as public servants who did the best for their country.

(I have written a long piece here. I've taken time. I will respectfully ask you that if you are only going to reply with a one-line answer/pick a sentence you have found offense with and drag us onto that course) please spare us both and don't bother.
I always welcome discussion, particulrly in this thread, which I started precisely for anyone who wanted to go long and dig in...which, for clarity, absolutely includes you!)
