Will Lankshear

That’s because he isn’t as good as Kane yet. And he isn’t being provided with the opportunity to develop to that level with us.

Last season was an excellent season for him. Is he ready yet? To start I’d say no. I think calling him better than Solanke and Richarlison is premature. Both of those are International strikers capped multiple times by their country.

I think it’s more of a vote by people against those two strikers for not being the right player for us this season. People would rather give Lankshear a chance than to watch Solanke or Richarlison again.

For me Lankshear would be third choice for us this season behind a new striker and whoever remains from Solanke or Richarlison. Maybe that’s not enough for Lankshear. Maybe he wants to be the main option and to start his career proper. If that’s true then he can’t be blamed but he hasn’t reached that level to start regularly for us.

I have full belief in his future. And only time will reveal how close to true I was. And yes I could also be spectacularly wrong.

I also don't think anyone is going that OTT over it, people are just discussing it TBH

It's not stopped City/Arsenal/Chelsea attracting players

There is quite an over reaction to this

Hopefully, I’m not super upset he is going in particular. We havent seen him at Prem level. I’m just a bit co cerned that all the players linked with moves away appear to be the promising younger players and I just wonder what it means for 3-5 seasons time.

Of course it could be the board are fully committed to constantly bringing in ready to go now players, but I think that what concerns me… it’s having faith in the board.

Personally I think its a money grab now to fund change and also create a better environment for youngsters to get a chance. Better to give players a chance at 3 nil up with 15 left than the last three years where we might be 4-1 down and needing crucial points "there you go lad, see what you can do".

Ultimately though there does need to be a balance in the next couple of years, you can't have such a set up as we have and not have some longer term plans along with the shorter

How many of the previous promising players have gone on to do much?

Parrot has gone on and done well, but in a league levels below the PL and he was meant to be the next big thing.

We are just moving inline with the clubs challenging most seasons

People are also ignoring we've signed 2/3 promising u16s this summer, so the club are looking into the future as well

I haven't watched this kid loads but just from the fact that Boro are in for him and no PL club, it would suggest scouts don't see it either.
How many prem teams start young strikers?
The prem now feeds off other leagues and developing players is not really a thing either the need for instant impact
It’s quite scary imo
And we’re a club that has HG issues and a real lack of football identity which you get from having investment in players (new and HG)

What I cannot fathom is howcome this aggressive approach excludes Lankshear but includes Davies, particularly after we have also signed Robertson. 🤨
By aggressive, I mean an accelerated push for his team to rapidly change and improve for which it seems he's mainly requiring people he knows (as far as is possible) can perform at the level he wants.
The very nature of youth development means you don't know that as much.

All the big clubs use their youth systems as a source of income, with them only keeping the real top talents. I think some people are going to need a period of adjustment to accept what acting like a big club actually looks like....

I will be disappointed if he leaves us, when he joined us from Sheffield Utd he had an injury and it took him a bit of time acclimatising to the club, he looked to me a big lad who gets by using his physicality, you get a lot like that a youth level. As season progressed the improvement in his play was impressive and it was noticeable that he was in the right place to score in virtually every game, that's an instinct you can't coach.
Since then I think there has been further improvements in his game and that's what I look for in young players. He may not go on to be a top player or be the type of player that fits what our manager wants but I feel he'll score goals wherever he goes.

It would actually have the opposite effect. Young players are more likely to join clubs where they see opportunities to develop and then move to earn considerably more money compared to clubs that keep them around ‘just in case’, while only giving them sporadic appearances.

I agree it's getting on that first rung of the ladder that's important.

Precisely... but being England, and the refusal to learn from other countries, we fail to use the model that larger European clubs adopt. A high quality youth setup (which their resources can afford)... scouting and recruiting promising youngsters... then selling them at rock bottom price with a obligatory buy back in 2 years time.

Nico Paz is such an example. Despite being clearly a top talent, Real Madrid sold him to Como for a measly €6 million in August 2024. As part of that deal, Real retained a significant 50% sell-on clause and obligatory buy-back options (7 to 9 mill depending on the year), allowing them to continuously capitalize on his development and eventually negotiate a massive €60 million transfer two years later. Como were happy because they got a highly talented player they would not have otherwise afforded for a ridiculous amount and the player was obviously happy because he got regular football at an early age as a regular with Como - not a loanee.

In June 2026, after Paz excelled in Serie A and helped Como qualify for the Champions League, Real Madrid officially informed Como of their intention to activate the €9 million buy-back option. However, because the player wanted to continue his immediate development under Cesc Fàbregas with guaranteed game time, a brand new deal was structured right away. Real Madrid technically re-acquired him and immediately sold 100% of his rights back to Como for a massive €60 million.

You may lose a couple of mill at the beginning but it's a fantastic model that works brilliantly...

Need to trust the judgement of the coaching staff at Spurs on Lankshear , if they don't think he is PL level and are willing to advise Vinai/Lange to sell then so be it. What is surprising is that as far as I can see he has never made an apperance for England U21's and when compared to Scarlett's England youth career Will is way behind.

Just a thought.... but could the club have looked at Mason Melia and seen more potential in him? After all there is only one young CF position that would concievably be available - at the most???
