Johan Lange - Sporting Director

Paratici, the guy who recommended Gattuso and Tudor as managers? No thanks

He also recommended De Zerbi, by all accounts. He just wanted Tudor as an interim because he felt De Zerbi at the time was still managing Marseille, and wouldn't agree to coach us until the summer.

Then he got sidelined by Dumb and Dumber and left, and they panicked and had no other plan so they just went with his original idea of hiring Tudor even when De Zerbi was available having just left Marseille.

If we can put Lange back in his lane, ie the lane he might be competent at, then maybe he has a value.
However, some people will never deal with what is 109% a demotion ...so even that may not work.

Looks like Lange will be sacrificed.

I actually feel a bit bad for him because I don’t think things like the January transfer window were entirely his fault, and in general he was put in a position he shouldn’t have been put in.

That said, if he had a hand in advocating that patience be shown to Frank, then it’s kind of indefensible. At a minimum he must be demoted.

Agreed.

I also feel bad for Tudor. He’s now seen as a bit of a weird laughing stock. Clearly his approach wasn’t right for a squad whose confidence was completely shot. But if he came in earlier there’s every chance he could have had more of a galvanising effect. It was just too late.

And I know he’s facing flack for the fitness sessions mid season, and I do think that changing approaches so much is contributing to the injuries. At the same time though, maybe that fitness helped us press better for De Zerbi.

I think Tudor would have been fine if he'd come in 6 weeks earlier. And i agree about De Zerbi benefitting from the improved fitness. The Leeds performance in particular probably didnt happen without Tudor

I suspect if Tudor came back managing another club he would be warmly welcomed. Frank would not be.

I read a while back that we wanted Dougie Freedman to join, in order to give us a pair of "Sporting Directors" (ie heads of recruitment), which is the Brentford model. So it may not be an actual demotion as such...

Freedman had a great track record at Palace - Oliae, Eze, Wharton etc

I wonder if we should go for Dan Ashworth, seeing as he's available and has worked with De Zerbi?

I worry about people who have done a great job at Palace/Brighton/Brentford/etc. Those clubs simply have no relation to us, to our budgets or ambitions. We want someone who did well at a club that both invests in youth as well as can buy established (60M+ players). Our transfer failures over the last 15 years has been the more expensive players not the cheap ones.

Whoever comes in, RDZ needs to be onboard with

It'd be great to have staff who have excelled in these non-playing roles, rather than promoting someone to the level of their own incompetence.

Such a big club can and should behave like one – the Peter Principle is hardly a new idea!

I saw something saying we were close to announcing the guy from Marseille to replace Lange. Cant find it now.. he used to play for Bayern and Roma back in the day. Anyone see that?

Edit. No credible source
