Wife was away this weekend, so I took the opportunity to watch a few movies she wouldn't have liked.

First one out was The zone of interest, which I found very disturbing, but also very good. The constant background noise from the concentration camp combined with the depiction of everyday events from the Auswich boss' family life was a brilliant piece of moviemaking. At times I felt physically unwell. That contrast absolutely made the movie. Also some obvious parallells to current events, which felt kinda scary.

Second was The Substance, a completely different movie, but enjoyable. Great satire and great acting, I think. A very creative spin on how society views aging in women. Plot was a bit shaky and illogical at times, even considering the peculiar starting premise, but it wasn't too annoying. Loved the references to the old horror movies; The shining, Carrie, The fly and The thing, to name a couple.

Well today I went again to the Monday Matinee at our local theatre. I’m sure the sound system is nothing like at a “proper” cinema or compared to a decent home set-up, but it suits me. £6.95 which includes a tea or coffee (but sadly not 2 glasses of wine). It is a bit like being at a small OAP convention though. 😀

Today’s film was The Penguin Lessons. Lovely film based on a true story. A bit twee/sentimental but there are worse ways to pass a couple of hours on a Monday afternoon.
Tea goes much better with a movie than alcohol.

I saw that a few weeks ago. Charming film.

I saw Zone Of Interest in a cinema equipped with Dolby Atmos sound system and the soundscape kept the audience on tenterhooks throughout. A thought provoking movie indeed.

I’m not a huge fan of horror genre but The Substance was one of my favourite films of 2024. Margaret Qualley’s looking more and more like Andie MacDowell back in the 1990s but suppose some of those scenes would’ve been bit too awkward to film with her mother!
