Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

I don't think we have to accept it, we just do and that's the sad part.
We should be aiming for a higher standard of public servant, but too many can't or won't accept that their side can be wrong.
Wrong is wrong.
It's better to call it out and take the initial heat than to stay quiet and reap the consequences latter.
You've sold out your principles by then and you'll never get them back.
Our politicians are paid like cr*p for the responsibility and stress. So nobody other than an incompetent narcissist wants to do it. E.g. Boris Johnson had to take a huge pay cut to become PM. He did it as he had dreamed of being "world king" since being a kid or whatever his sister said.

He may well have taken a huge pay cut, but we were paying him to fulfill his dream.
He's a buffoon and the evidence was there that he was a buffoon, but still we elected him.
That's our fault, not his.

A basic of £100k, plus expenses, plus a generous pension along with many other benefits is not crap.

It is crap when you consider you're in charge of the whole country. The CEO of a large private company will be getting £millions

They're not all in charge of the whole country.
Nobody forced them into it, and based on how the country is run they'd be lucky to a job in any competently run business.

That's kind of my point. We end up with MPs that are MPs because its the only way on GHod's green earth they'd get a job paying £80k a year but then again the people you'd really want to be MPs wouldn't touch all the hassle, stress and public scrutiny for that wage as they can get a lot more elsewhere

I think you're right.

Even if you did manage to attract some decent, smart, impressive people into the political world....the disillusionment and exhaustion comes quickly. And I think that two fold now....before it was just the internals of the system and the ability to get things done in a timely fashion. Now I think you can add ridiculous external pressures and scrutiny that leaves you with no room to breathe. Yes that existed before, but now it's coming from everywhere and coming at you quickly (plus a load of it can be gonads). And the wage doesn't warrant it.

I mean the fact that the new great hope of this forum is a guy who was previous mainly known for offering hypnotherapy to increase women's breast sizes is all you need to know!

I agree with what you are saying. I just feel there is another undercurrent when anything about Rayner is reported on.

If she did truly act on advice given, where she had provided all the correct information to those advising her, then she will probably be in the clear from the Standards/Ethics enquiry.
Personally I think we will have to resign in any case as this will not go away. Whilst I feel that would be a shame for the Labour Party, Starmer set out his stall in terms of maintaining high standards in office so he has to adhere to that.
coz she’s Ginger?

Ah, so we’re just overlooking the multiple businesses he’s bankrupted, the sexual assault conviction, the fraud conviction, and the provoking of an attempt to overturn an election?

Righty ho.
Not overlooking them, no. I said he was intelligent, successful and got a lot of things right in his life. Not that he was a good man that hadn't made mistakes.
