Thomas Frank - Head Coach

Romero has lived here for 4 years now.

His English will be fine.

I don’t care who the captain is myself, leaders lead, if you need an armband for that you aren’t one.

Romero just lifted a European cup as captain. If he's not made permanent captain, someone's overthinking it, or he's off.
Can see the argument that if he wants out sooner or later, doesn’t want to sign a new contract he may not be the best choice.

Can also see an argument that a captain role is more about who is a unifying force behind the scenes. That a leader will lead no matter what and that unity from the armband/role is more important.

That being said, for me too from the outside Romero seems like the obvious choice. Brave, already a leader and by now pretty much a serial winner. Seems like a good standard setter.

Anyone else get the feeling that Frank is going to take a very practical approach to season 1 with us? The emphasis will be on sorting out our defensive record after conceding over 60 goals for 2 seasons. I have a feeling Frank has seen enough in pre-season with the existing players to know that we're not yet designed for high possession stats and passing out slickly from back to front. Injuries are part of this equation. Instead I think we'll see more direct play and we'll see pace used for counter attacks and running into space. That running into space might look like chasing lost causes at times but will be a tactic to keep the opposition away from our goal. The work rate from the forwards will be key to Frank's system. So will their individuality and ability to do amazing things. They've all got it in them to be fair.

I'm expecting these tactics to evolve over time though. May not be this coming season though.

Nothing wrong with a practical/pragmatic approach.

We've seen in preseason how we can score from turnovers. We'll probably be a good threat from set pieces.

But for that to work reasonably well I think we also need that ability to play through pressure. When in possession deep and when we win the ball when defending deeper.

Not having a lot of possession isn't a big problem at all. Not posing a fairly regular attacking threat when opponents press us high or when we're defending deeper is a major problem imo. To do that we need to turn possession under pressure deeper into good attacking moves.

Yeah, I'm not sure how much we know yet how important Solanke becomes for the reasons you talk about. In some ways, I think Scarlett may become more useful than Richi in Frank's system if he sticks around.

I agree about Scarlett, he has good movement and can hold a ball if it's near him (too many of our out balls are just punts anywhere). Much as I like Richarlson commitment he looks a broken man and Scarlett couldn't do much worse.

I think Solanke will be very important. He's one of our best holdup players (along with Kulusevski, maybe Kudus?). He's well rounded and can operate in several different ways as a striker imo. Giving us versatility that we'll probably need with Frank likely to be tactically flexible.

If Richi stays fit (or fit enough) he offers way more than Scarlett. But the if there is pretty big.

Just saw Thomas Frank interview with fans where the question was what he demands from players:
1. good attitude
2. following the playbook
3. players able to express themselves (he also emphasized about being daring in another question)

I believe (3) is going to allow us to see some players get back to their natural best.

In the sense I think its a great standard to be set by the manager...........I applaud him for it and I applaud him for not pulling his shots publicly
Fair play, I honestly think most managers would do that for a player who we probably want rid of anyway and has done it a few times clearly taking the P.

If it was one of our big players, say Romero and he did that once or twice and Frank omitted him from the team then that's what I would call a huge power move. I think almost any PL manager would have this standard tbh, but yeah still applaud it....
