Redknapp's Autobiography

Never understood the hate. Then again don't understand why people hate anyone who played or managed us if they did their best for us.
Not like any of us know them personally.
He did a very good job for us. Got us in the cl. Could have been better. But i will always remember the city game and was lucky enough to be in the san siro when we beat ac milan. Even loved being at the madrid game despite the result.
We were on the big stage for the first time in my life and didn't feel out of place.

15 years ago today that we beat Emirates Marketing Project to qualify for CL

That was such an epic, epic night. I saw '81, '82, and '84 cup wins, and I have to say for some reason, this was right up there with them. It's certainly the best away end I've ever been a part of (I missed Ajax regrettably) but even mates who went to both say this was right up there...incredible...15 years ago eh? Sigh...

People can and will snear about "ohhhh but 4th isnt a trophy" and they would be right, but look at the players, thats organic, thats not an Enic lead behaviour

On that evening it felt like a moment, it felt like a massive step forward....we'd broken thru a ceiling.

The top 4 at that time was a long established glass ceiling - it was a big moment and yes also a big achievement breaking through, the fact it's only City who also done so after then shows what a hurdle it was.
It may not sound palatable, but the '4th place trophy' is worth far, far more than an FA Cup or League Cup win, so you could argue that ENIC have won 7 trophies in their tenure. If those 7 trophies were all domestic cups, we'd be in a far worse state financially. And I don't doubt for a minute that all the whingers would be saying '7 domestic trophies is all well and good, but we need to be in the CL, ENIC out!'

CL participation = £100m
FA Cup winners = £2m + gate receipts
League cup winners = £1m + gate receipts

Leicester, asto villa and Saudi Sportswashing Machine have done it since. But get what you are saying.

Yeah should have added on that it's only recently that other teams have started to get in too (Leicester obviously a few years back, but a real one off)

I think last couple of years has seen another change to the landscape here - previously top 4 then top 6 and now due to the wealth of the PL we're looking at around 8 clubs that will be in contention for a CL place via the league (potentially more should it regularly be 5th/6th that qualify)

The other thing is if 5-6 teams do qualify each year. The money is diluted a bit. (Split more ways). Which is a good thing as hopefully will mean more competition not just for the league but to get into the cl in the first place.
The sky 4 had a dominance for many years. Then it became a big 6. Can see it becoming as you say a big 8. Which is good for the game. Hopefully city and chelsea get a punishment so it curtails the cheating.

We were on the back row right next to the City fans. When it got to stoppage time the bloke next to me kept asking 'how long left'

It might have been only 4 or 5minutes, but it felt the longest period of added time EVER...but what joy when that whistle went

Mrs PW had brought us sandwiches to snack on in the car park, but I couldn't eat a thing before the game I was that nervous.

Tomorrow night might be the first time in Ange's tenure that I will feel anywhere that nervous

I think the PL TV rights has grown so much now that it limits/dilutes the advantage that CL football money brings to clubs who qualify - whereas back in the 'top 4' days it had a far greater impact. You've got clubs way down the pecking order in the PL who can go abroad and offer terms which pretty much all but the top 1 or 2 in each league cannot compete with, this is a more recent development and us why the PL is becoming much more competitive for the CL places

Certainly for england. Rest of europe not so much. Although italy is surprisingly competitive. Lot of different league winners over the last few years.

I was about 12-14 rows from the front just to the right of the goal. I remember when Defoe slid and didn't connect, my optimism suddenly went south. A mate grabbed me and said 'we'll get one more chance'...it was fudging bedlam when Crouchy scored wasn't it...

It was one of them games where we were so much better than them that night, you just felt we were gonna get sucker punched

It was like when they bring a building down with dynamite.... everything just collapsed forwards.
